I really don't know about what all bioware did for this game as far as research. I mean I could tell the motion capturing, which I wish I could have watched or been involved with... but I know nothing about the book knowledge and or reading that they did. Being a Kung Fu teacher/practioner and wanna be scholar as well as a professional of the game industry, I was surprised while deploying a watchful eye as I was playing yesterday to notice a possible reference to something that is a Chinese national folklore treasure. The book called 'The Outlaws of the Marsh' could quite have been referenced too when talking to Fen Do the Merchant after leaving the school in search of Dawn Star and the atrocity that Gao has just committed at this point in the game. The end of the Text reads/says: Too many outlaws make their home in that marsh. This is a literary work of china from years ago. It has stood the test of time as the ultimate kung fu/martial arts story. Many legends of that based on truths account that was turned into a story, have come about and are still being told today. It has been translated in the recent years so you can find it under the afformentioned title in english now. Being that my life has always included a form of martial art of some sort or another and that the last 11 years has been that of studying kung fu, this game fills me with small if not great delights, that finally a decent representation of the aspects this world that many of us hold dear is finally represented in a more complete & positive light! For years too many focus on WU [the martial]... This is incomplete/imperfect... In Shaolin we say 'san bao hui yi' [3 teasures are one > referring to Chan -a.k.a. zen-, Wu -a.k.a. the martial-, and Yi -a.k.a. healing-] Chan[zen] cultivates the mind, Wu strengthens the body, Yi helps the world. These 3 cannot be separated. If you realize the theory of Chan, you can make progress in your medicine/healing technique [chigong etc] and reach the summit. If you can make these two coordinate, then your kung fu will increase. According to the rules at shaolin all these must simultaneously increase. If you train in just one, you cannot find balance or enlightment. Bioware has done a great job on focusing on this for the game. My love for you guys has increased even more so! Thanks again Bioware can't wait for JE #2!

*Glances at the four volume copy of Outlaws of the Marsh on his bookshelf.*

Yep, it was one of the many influences on Jade. We tried to do our research for this one, though obviously not many things will be taken from that series, as Jade Empire is an original world.

As someone who clearly loves the work, wou might note some familiar elements of a certain largish, loutish, drunk axe wielding maniac you meet in a forest somewhere. Certainly something of an homage to my favorite character in Outlaws.

I remember hearing in the recent G4 Making-Of special, and in numorous interviews, that Outlaws of the Marsh is one of the titles that BioWare read for reference when making Jade Empire.

AH yes... the black whirlwind... hehe the famed Shaolin Li Kwei Axes set derived from the actual living outlaw of the marsh that hid in Shaolin and passed on his martial skills to the monks in order for him to stay in the temple. Hehe I could imagine that most of that written in the book isnt very far from the truth about how he really was... as there are many stories of some outstanding monks that were prone to that type of behavior... to mix that style with the Drunken if that technique existed back then would be incredible, and thats not to say that he didnt employ his own kind of drunken flailing to the axe set. If youre a fan of him and or like drunken techniques I would suggest that you look into the Li Kwei Axes of Shaolin, and or check out Sifu Troy Dunwood of Ying Hung Association [Heir of the 8 immortal drunken style] street fighting techniques DVD at joybotsin.com > The DVD is only $15 US last I looked, and/or if you want if its easier I could just get a copy from Sifu and send it to you. Its damn kuu. Anyhow, Thanks for listenin to my rant. Take care... thanks again!

Actually Razor Rude~b~woy [in rastafarian accent no less] to reply to your question I didn't. I don't make time to watch TV. So as much as I like those shows like G4 etc, I have no access to them. Teaching, training and working kind of takes up ALL of my time. Also, unlike many others I like to know less about a game before I play it. As long as the game seems like it would be kuu, I'll pick it up or try for it. I bought two copies of this, one for me one for a friend, who just happens to be one of my former guys that used to work for me @ Konami USA in Redwood City. If Bioware makes it, I'm generally gonna play it cuz plainly put, their games DONT suck. WOOT! In fact, I think that they might quite be the only company at this point that I would consider moving from california to work for. Besides, last year while working at Eidos, my boss let only me go to E3 while the rest of PD stayed behind [cuz I bought non-refundable tickets-was worried he wouldnt let me go so I chanced it-], and I went with a former co-worker/producer friend of mine from Sega to the show. I Actually was taken care and quite well I might add, by the kind folk of Bioware there. They showed me JE and that was enough to sell me on the game... I didn't even need to read the rave reviews that are well warranted. Just to tease yall, not only did they treat me right in the closed preview of the game [aka a beer in hand, nice plush seats and some kuu swag - posters and a sport bottle with JE emblazened on it that Im drinking my water out of right now] but they are and were to this date the most informative polite and nice people that I've ever met at an E3 having been there 5 years in a row now, this one upcoming makes six. Prolly gonna get press passes this year through an online fitness mag that a friend of mine and I have just agreed to start writing for. Take care!
