EDITORIAL

The final Appeal of the Meeting of Religions in Milan read: "Our world seems to have forgotten that human life is sacred. Yet, God is close to each and every victim of violence and wants the disappearance of violence that possesses hearts and minds".

These words return to mind in these weeks, as we behold the "waste" of peace and human lives in the news of endless war and the particularly bloody and tragic terrorist attacks coming one after the other in Iraq, Egypt, Pakistan.

We have expressed our concern for the instant repatriation of refugees coming to the shores of Italy, generally from countries at war and asking for political asylum. Their immediate return to their homeland often constitutes a death sentence.

In Antwerp, in Belgium, in Rome in the next few days, and then in Germany, the memory of the deportation of the Jews wishes to express the necessity for a culture of life.

In this spirit, our commitment against the death penalty continues and we invite everybody to join us in the urgent appeal to save the life of Dominique Green, a young Afro-American, whose execution is fixed for the end of this month. For years the Community has been at Dominique's side and close to many others who are sentenced to death like him. His life is dear to us. With grief and sorrow we see the date marking a sentence with no coming back approach and with our appeals and our prayer we ask for his life to be respected.

29. Sonntag im Jahreskreis Gedenken an den heiligen Ignazius, den Bischof von Antiochien. Er wurde zum Tode verurteilt und nach Rom gebracht, wo er als Märtyrer starb (?107).

Gedenken an Lukas, den Evangelisten und Verfasser der Apostelgeschichte. Nach der Tradition war er Arzt und Maler.

Donnerstag, 21. Oktober: Gedenken an die Kirche

Gedenken an Maria Salome, die Mutter von Jakobus und Johannes, die dem Herrn bis unter das Kreuz folgte und dabei war, als er ins Grab gelegt wurde.
