Description of Work: 


This is a Transportation Worker II position located in the Division 2 Special Maintenance Operations Group. Workers will be expected to traverse steep and uneven terrain, work in extreme temperature conditions, perform manual labor road maintenance duties, and other assigned duties. Workers in this position will be expected to act upon both verbal and written communication to successfully complete assigned tasks. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, performing preventive maintenance and repairs to pavements, shoulder maintenance, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inventorying and tracking quantities used of materials, performing manual labor tasks, and the operation of assigned heavy equipment. Work will involve lifting up to 80 lbs. repeatedly. Work involves walking and standing for long periods of time, shoveling, raking, and sweeping.  Workers will be exposed to all types of weather conditions. This position is subject to emergency call back, scheduled night work, and out of town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
  • Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device).
  • Experience in one of the following:  pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching.
  • Experience with installation of erosion control devices.

 Additional Expectations:


The ability to be able to operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe shoes are required.

Offer of employment will be contingent on successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. 

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
