Sources: Swansea City and Birmingham City race to sign Buchanan

Swansea City and Birmingham City are battling it out to sign ex-Derby County defender Lee Buchanan, sources have told Football Insider.

The 22-year-old left Derby last summer and joined German club Werder Bremen despite attracting interest from a number of English clubs.

Swansea and Birmingham are both looking to bolster their left-back options this summer and they are ready to offer Buchanan a return to the EFL from Germany.

The left-back made 23 appearances in all competitions for Bremen last season, but only three of them came as a starter.

In those 23 matches, Buchanan had scored one goal as the Bundesliga side finished the season in 13th place.

Buchanan scored his first goal for Bremen in a dramatic 3–2 win at Borussia Dortmund last August.

Before leaving to play football in Germany, the left-back had made 70 appearances for Derby County, which is also the club who he made his professional debut for.

Buchanan received his first international call up as a member of the England U19s squad and eventually made his debut for that age group during a 3–1 defeat to France in Marbella in 2019.

In 2020, he would go on to make his debut for the England U20s during a 2–0 victory over Wales at St. George’s Park.

This would then be followed by a call-up to the England U21’s where has made two appearances.

Swansea and Birmingham have registered interest in the defender as they look to better their campaigns compared to the previous season.
