Senior Reasearch Assistant

BADAS Centre for Health Research and Implementation (BADAS-CHRI), formerly BADAS-Perinatal Care Project (BADAS-PCP), is a collaboration between the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS), Institute for Global Health (IGH) University College London, UK and Department of Health Sciences, University of York, UK which has been working since 2002 on health issues. BADAS-CHRI is looking for a qualified candidate for the position of Senior Research Assistant for “The Bangladesh DCLARE Project- Diabetes: Community-led Awareness, Response and Evaluation”. The project will be Boalmari, Faridpur based.

More than one third of adults in rural Bangladesh have raised blood glucose levels, meeting WHO criteria for intermediate hyperglycaemia or type-2 diabetes (T2DM). Our cluster randomised controlled trial showed that, after 18 months of PLA intervention, community awareness and understanding of T2DM was greatly increased, and the prevalence of T2DM and intermediate hyperglycaemia was 64% lower in intervention villages than in control villages. The current study aims to scale up a PLA community mobilisation intervention to prevent intermediate hyperglycaemia and T2DM and improve control of T2DM in Bangladesh. The Senior Research Assistant shall be responsible for the following roles:

Responsibilities 

  • Follow informed consent procedures and recruit research participants.
  • Collect qualitative data with community stakeholders through interviews, focus group discussions and observations in rural and urban areas.
  • Collect qualitative data from policy makers and health providers.
  • Transcribe qualitative data (in Bangla) and translate (to English), using Microsoft Word.
  • Disseminate and discuss research methods and findings with community and policy stakeholders.
  • Maintain a field diary to plan and document field activities.

Qualifications, experience and knowledge
Masters in Anthropology/Sociology/Social Work or any relevant field with good academic results  
At least 2 years experience in public health research  
   
Experience in collecting qualitative data through interviews, and focus group discussions Experience in collecting qualitative data through unstructured observation
Experience in transcribing qualitative data  
Experience in translating qualitative data Experience in analysing qualitative data
Experience of writing reports Published writer
Understanding of research ethics and consent procedures  
Experience of using participatory methods in research Experience of using creative or arts-based approaches in research or development
   
Basic knowledge about diabetes, its risk factors and the cultural factors affecting diabetes management and prevention. Lived experience and/or research experience about diabetes, its risk factors and the cultural factors affecting diabetes management and prevention.
  Lived experience and/or research experience about non-communicable diseases risk factors and the cultural factors affecting NCD management and prevention.
Skills
Computer literacy - comfortable using Microsoft Word and Excel Experience of using qualitative analysis software
  Fluency in written and spoken English
Aptitude
Ability to work independently and collaboratively  
Willing to travel to rural areas, build and maintain good relationships  
Ability to work across academic and non-academic disciplines and collaborate and communicate effectively  
Demonstrated willingness to learn  

Job Location: In Boalmari, Faridpur, with frequent field visits in the intervention areas.

Job Nature: Full-time

Contract Type and Duration

  • The appointments are on a contractual basis.
  • The contract term shall be up to 28 February 2024 (12 months), and further renewal/termination is strictly based on the performance and continuation of the project.

Salary and Benefits

  • Consolidated Tk. 42,000 per month.
  • Festival bonus and other benefits as per organization rules.
