This is a full-time, tenure track position in Kanaka Maoli/Native Hawaiian Visual Art to begin Fall 2024, pending position clearance and availability of funds. Seeking applications who will develop and teach Kanaka Maoli Visual Art as well as courses in one or more areas of the department’s Art Studio program. Teaching assignments will be determined in accordance with the candidate’s areas of expertise. This position also contributes to graduate programs, student supervision, and mentorship.

We invite applicants who maintain an active studio practice, are immersed in an expansive definition of Kanaka Maoli Visual Art, and support the transmission, transformation, and expression of Native Hawaiian knowledge in its various forms. We are especially interested in a candidate who will take an active role in shaping the department and university in ways that contribute to UHM’s strategic vision as “an Indigenous-serving institution grounded in aloha ‘aina.” The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated connection to Kanaka Maoli communities, as well as a deep understanding of Kanaka Maoli creative and cultural practices as evidenced in their research, teaching, and commitment to service.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach undergraduate studio practice courses in Kanaka Maoli /Native Hawaiian Visual Art, other studio areas that align with the applicant’s expertise and departmental needs, and cross-media BFA and MFA seminars rotationally;
  • Advise majors;
  • Provide mentorship to BFA and MFA students;
  • Support studio/lab management;
  • Develop/supervise a Kanaka Maoli Visual Art curriculum;
  • Maintain an active professional art practice and research;
  • Participate in the governance of the department and provide service to the college, university, and community;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Terminal degree in studio visual art (MFA, studio PhD, or equivalent). All requirements for the degree must be completed by August 2024;
  2. Evidence of teaching visual art;
  3. Evidence of potential to teach Kanaka Maoli visual art;
  4. Evidence of potential to develop curriculum;
  5. Record of exhibitions and/or projects at the local and regional level;
  6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Active record of exhibitions and projects at the national and international level, and growing recognition in the field;
  2. College-level teaching experience;
  3. Experience in managing art labs;
  4. Experience as a supervisor (such as graduate students and part-time adjunct instructors)
  5. Experience in curriculum development;
  6. Ability to incorporate Kanaka Maoli knowledge in relation to contemporary art context in teaching;
  7. Established connections and collaborative experience with Kanaka Maoli communities;
  8. Proficiency in 'Olelo Hawai'i;
  9. Engaged in the core principles of UHM’s strategic plan and its mission as a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning.           
  10. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success as well as working with diverse communities.
