Course description:
This is an on-campus course with required travel to Mexico. You must take the on-campus course in order to travel. The travel portion carries an additional fee.
This course discusses the themes of self-governance, sustainability, and the arts and prepares students for their international experience in Oaxaca. In Mexico, students will encounter and study unusually robust forms of self-governance, study local artistic traditions, and consider the challenges and potentials of sustainability in a developing region- where responses are often shaped by practices of self-governance. The experience in Mexico will complicate students' understanding of the course themes both in Mexican and American society.
Oaxaca is a culturally, linguistically, and environmentally diverse state in southern Mexico, famous for its rich indigenous heritage, arts, languages, and natural beauty. Much of this diversity converges in the capital of Oaxaca City, in places such as the markets, where local vendors sell their crafts and foods, and in central plazas, which become focal points for music and dance performances and rallying areas for groups with specific social, political, and economic agendas. Local economic cooperatives, customary political institutions, and grassroots community museums are common mechanisms through which local communities have improved cohesion, protected cultural heritage, promoted sustainability, and maintained economic independence.

Course fee: Approximately $1,850. Includes housing, some meals, excursions, and health insurance. Student is responsible for flights and personal expenses, plus three credits of spring semester tuition.
Eligibility requirements: At least a 3.0 GPA. Students must be enrolled in CLLC-L 210 or ANTH-A 208 in Spring 2023.
Process: Because the travel to Mexico is a required part of the on-campus course, the CLLC and ANTH courses are locked for enrollment and you will not be able to enroll yourself. You must first apply and be accepted to the study abroad program. After your acceptance, you will receive permissions to enroll in either the CLLC or ANTH course.
