Southampton striker Sekou Mara is close to joining Werder Bremen on loan with an option to make the move permanent.

The 21-year-old joined Southampton from Bordeaux last summer in a deal worth €13million (£11.1m).

However, the Frenchman failed to fully adjust to life at St Marys, scoring two goals and providing three assists in 33 games last season.

Mara has made three appearances for Southampton this season, most recently coming on as a substitute during his side's 2-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers last Saturday.

Southampton are next in action against Sunderland on Saturday.

Brentford make club-record offer for Bakayoko

Brentford have submitted a club-record offer of €35million to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko. The deal includes an extra €5m in potential add-ons and a sell-on clause for PSV.

Brentford have been searching for a new forward all summer to provide them with extra options while last season’s top goalscorer Ivan Toney serves an eight-month suspension for gambling offences and as preparation in case he leaves in the future.

The club’s top targets were Nottingham Forest winger Brennan Johnson and Fiorentina’s Nico Gonzalez. Fiorentina’s CEO Joe Barrone publicly said Gonzalez “is not for sale” while Forest rejected Brentford’s latest offer of around £40m for Johnson and are holding out for closer to £50m.

Brentford have switched their attention to Bakayoko, who helped PSV beat Rangers 7-3 on aggregate in the final qualification round for the Champions League group stages this week.

The 20-year-old predominantly plays on the right but can play on the left too.

He made his debut for Belgium in March and provided an assist for Romelu Lukaku in a 3-0 victory over Sweden in a qualifying match for next summer’s European Championship.

Philogene finalises deal to join Hull

Jaden Philogene has finalised a move to join Hull City in a deal worth £5million.

Philogene underwent a medical at Hull last Friday but the final terms of the agreement were still being discussed between Aston Villa and Hull City.

Paperwork was done on Thursday afternoon, with Villa having first option should he leave Hull and a buy-back clause. Other clubs had expressed an interest in that period, but Philogene is set to sign a four-year contract having made the decision to leave Villa in search of regular game-time.

Manager Unai Emery had made it clear to Philogene that he wanted him to remain at the club this season, but accepted Villa could track his progress at Hull. Philogene was into the final two years of his contract and had offers from abroad, including clubs in Turkey.

Philogene has made one Premier League appearance this season, coming on as a second-half substitute during Villa's opening-day fixture against Newcastle United.

Augsburg and Tottenham Hotspur are close to reaching an agreement on a loan deal for Japhet Tanganga.

The deal would include an option to buy, though nothing has been agreed at this point.

The Athletic revealed that the two clubs were in talks earlier on Thursday, and yesterday reported that a potential move to Torino was off after the Italian club and Spurs could not reach an agreement.

Barcelona agree deal with LAFC for Fall

Barcelona agree deal with LAFC for Fall

Barcelona has agreed a deal with LAFC to sign center back Mamadou Fall, sources familiar with the deal tell The Athletic.

The deal is a loan with purchase option, which could be north of $7million (€6.5m, £5.5m) including add-ons. The deal will need to be finalized ahead of Friday night’s transfer window deadline in Spain.

Villarreal was also working on a deal for Fall, but he is close to joining Barcelona. Fall spent last season on loan at Villarreal.

The 20-year-old is among the most highly-rated young players in MLS. He made one La Liga appearance on loan at Villarreal, but was a regular with the club’s second team, playing 25 games. He is likely to get opportunities early with Barcelona’s B team as he settles into the club.

The Senegalese defender broke through with LAFC in 2021 and has made 42 appearances with the MLS side. He has made three first-team appearances this summer on his return to LAFC.

LAFC currently sits second in the Western Conference with 40 points after 25 matches. They are the reigning MLS Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup champions.

It’s not the first time Barcelona is nearing a deal to sign a player from MLS this year, after picking up Mexico international right-back Julian Araujo from the LA Galaxy in the winter. He’s currently on loan at Las Palmas.

Pellistri to stay at Man Utd

Facundo Pellistri will stay at Manchester United in this transfer window after Erik ten Hag made the decision to keep the Uruguayan winger.

Ten Hag held recent talks with Pellistri and outlined his wishes for the 21-year-old to continue his development at United rather than on loan elsewhere.

Pellistri received interest from more than a dozen clubs, with Sheffield United and FC Twente high among them, but Ten Hag sees him as a useful player for his team.

Ten Hag has sent Pellistri on in two Premier League games so far, for 13 minutes against Wolves and five minutes at Tottenham, and is expected to increase the opportunities as the fixtures stack up.

Pellistri signed for United in a £9million deal from Penarol in 2020, and he has two years left on his contract with the option of an extra one. Preliminary talks have been held over improved and extended terms.

Man Utd working to complete deal for Reguilon

Man Utd working to complete deal for Reguilon

Manchester United are working to complete a deal to sign left-back Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Old Trafford club have been granted permission for the 26-year-old to travel and undergo a medical.

Reguilon had been among United’s options following Luke Shaw's injury and they subsequently turned their focus to him.

Marc Cucurella was the priority target but his appearance for Chelsea last night complicated matters.

If United had wanted the option of sending him back to Chelsea in January, he would no longer have been eligible to exit and appear for a third club this season.

United’s decision was made for footballing and financial reasons, with the hope being that Reguilon can be joined by Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat before Friday's deadline.

Shaw's injury coupled with a knock for regular backup Tyrell Malacia prompted United into looking for an outside solution.

Diogo Dalot operated at left-back for United's victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Reguilon spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid, where he made 12 appearances.

Analysis: Phillips has struggled to break through

It was always going to be difficult for Nat Phillips — who has gone to Celtic on loan — to establish himself as first choice at Liverpool during the era of Virgil van Dijk in particular. But that's not to say Phillips hasn't been a useful squad player during his time at the club.

He is nicknamed the “Bolton Baresi” after his performances during the injury-hit 2020-21 campaign when he became first-choice in central defence alongside Rhys Williams with Van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all sidelined.

Phillips helped Liverpool secure Champions League qualification for the 2021-22 season on the final day quite crucially with the club going on to play in the 2022 final.

Arguably his finest moment in a Liverpool shirt arrived at the San Siro during that Champions League campaign with a Cruyff turn out of his own box during a 2-1 win against AC Milan.

Wolves confirm signing of Bueno

Wolves have confirmed the permanent signing of centre-back Santiago Bueno from Girona.

The Uruguay international has signed a five-year deal at Molineux and follows the arrival of Enso Gonzalez earlier this week.

Speaking about the 24-year-old, Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs said: “This is a signing we’ve been working on for a while. Uruguay are renowned for producing world-class centre-backs.

"At 24 he’s a good age, with a great football education coming through Barcelona B. We were one centre back short, so now we think in that group of four we’ve got a little bit of everything so we’re really happy.

Celtic have confirmed the loan signing of Nat Phillips from Liverpool.

The 26-year-old centre-back has joined Brendan Rodgers' side initially until the January window when the arrangement will be reassessed by all parties.

Phillips said: “I’m really excited. When I heard about the interest it was one that got me excited.

"There were a few other options that didn’t quite make me feel the same as this one did, so I was really keen to get it over the line and I’m delighted to be here now.”

The Athletic previously reported that Phillips had agreed to join the Scottish Premiership champions.

Phillips has made 29 senior appearances for Liverpool but featured only five times in all competitions last season.

Leeds sign midfielder Gruev from Werder Bremen

Leeds United have completed the signing of defensive midfielder Ilia Gruev from Bundesliga side SV Werder Bremen for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old has signed a four-year deal at Elland Road with the transfer being completed subject to international clearance and a work permit.

Gruev progressed through the youth ranks at Bremen and went on to make 62 appearances in total for the club, scoring one goal.

The defensive midfielder has also made eight international appearances for the Bulgaria national team.

He becomes Leeds' seventh signing of the summer following the arrivals of Ethan Ampadu, Sam Byram, Karl Darlow, Joel Piroe, Joe Rodon and Djed Spence.

Gruev could soon be joined at Elland Road by Rangers' Glen Kamara as the Athletic reported earlier today that the Championship club had agreed a deal to sign the Finland international.

Forest make increased bid for Sangare

Forest make increased bid for Sangare

Nottingham Forest have increased their bid to sign Ibrahim Sangare from PSV Eindhoven – but it almost certainly depends on whether a deal can be struck with Tottenham Hotspur for Brennan Johnson.

Negotiations with Spurs are currently at an impasse because of Forest’s valuation of Johnson at £50million.

Daniel Levy, Tottenham’s chairman, is reluctant to pay so much and, with Brentford backing off from their long-term pursuit of Johnson, that means a financial compromise will have to be found for a deal to happen.

Forest have made a verbal offer, understood to be around £30million, to PSV in their latest move to lure away Sangare from a club that has just qualified for the Champions League.

As it stands, no fee has been agreed with PSV but the clubs are talking at regular intervals and Forest have been encouraged to believe that something can happen.

As The Athletic revealed six weeks ago, Sangare has been Forest’s top target this summer, having identified him a year ago.

At the start of July, Forest’s opening bid for the Ivory Coast international was £25million with a further £6million in add-ons. They have now restructured the package to make it more appealing to PSV, as well as offering Sangare a significant pay rise from his current salary.

However, Sangare’s potential availability has been known to a number of Europe’s top clubs and Forest have always realised he was an ambitious target who may have aspirations of joining a higher-ranking team.

As talks continue, however, it may all become hypothetical anyway unless a deal for Johnson happens.

Evangelos Marinakis, the Forest owner, has taken charge of the process, along with his son, Miltiadis, and is willing to sell Johnson as long as he thinks the money is right. If not, Forest are prepared to keep the Wales international and that would make a possible transfer for Sangare extremely difficult for a club that wants to remain on the right side of the financial fair-play rules.

Konate doubt for Villa game, expected to be available for France

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate is expected to miss Sunday’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa – but France boss Didier Deschamps is confident he will be fit for international duty next week.

The 24-year-old centre-back has been hampered by a muscle problem since the 3-1 win over Bournemouth and sat out last weekend’s dramatic victory at Newcastle United.

Konate has yet to return to full training but Deschamps has still called him up for France’s games against Republic of Ireland and Germany.

“We’ll assess the situation on Monday, but he’s supposed to be available,” Deschamps said.

“Of course, I won’t take risks. He was stopped for four days, he followed his programme and he will train until Monday. It’s highly likely that he won’t be involved for Liverpool’s game on Sunday.”

Dyche: Clubs 'circling' for Iwobi and Cannon

Dyche: Clubs 'circling' for Iwobi and Cannon

Everton boss Sean Dyche says that clubs are "circling" for Alex Iwobi and Tom Cannon ahead of Friday's transfer deadline.

The Athletic reported on Wednesday that Fulham were in talks for midfielder Iwobi, while forward Cannon has attracted interest from several Championship clubs, but no agreement for either player is as yet in place.

Dyche, who admitted that a "couple of situations" could potentially see Demarai Gray also leave Goodison Park, will seek reinforcements in wide areas should Iwobi or Cannon depart.

“The obvious one, if these things change with Alex or Tom, is the wide areas," the manager said.

“The front area we're trying to find that balance. It's going to take him (Youssef Chermiti) time. The market is difficult. We're trying to find our way. It's very difficult."

Alzate set for permanent Brighton exit

Brighton's signing of Carlos Baleba from Lille has cleared the way for a permanent move for Steven Alzate.

This blog revealed last week that Brighton were reluctant to sanction a departure for the 24-year-old midfielder until a replacement was sealed for Moises Caicedo, following the Ecuadorian's move to Chelsea.

The capture of Baleba has triggered the opportunity for Alzate to seek more regular game time elsewhere, which will in turn improve his chances of becoming a regular for Colombia again.

A move away from England is the most likely outcome for Alzate, who spent last season on loan to Standard Liege in Belgium.

It won't necessarily need to happen by the close of the window in the UK at 11pm tomorrow night, due to different deadlines in different countries.

Analysis: How Reguilon faded after bright start at Spurs

Analysis: How Reguilon faded after bright start at Spurs

Sergio Reguilon made a hugely exciting start to life at Tottenham Hotspur with an all-action display against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup in September 2020. He followed that up with his Premier League debut five days later against, funnily enough, Manchester United at Old Trafford. Spurs won the game 6-1 and Reguilon again impressed.

He looked like quickly becoming a fans' favourite.

Somehow though it hasn't quite worked out like that. The manager who signed him, Jose Mourinho, was gone seven months later, and after Nuno Espirito Santo's brief reign, Reguilon fell out of favour under Antonio Conte – not helped by a groin injury towards the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

He was loaned out to Atletico Madrid last season and despite returning this summer and featuring in a few friendlies, he has not been able to force himself into Ange Postecoglou's plans.

Man United, transfers and FFP considerations

As we just reported, Manchester United are seriously considering Tottenham Hotspur's Sergio Reguilon as a live option in their search for a left-back.

Going into this summer’s transfer window, the consensus was that Manchester United needed to spend. And spend they have.

The three major arrivals of Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund came in at an initial total of £163million ($207m), potentially rising to £180m with add-ons. With only a few days of the window remaining, United may not be done yet.

However, financial fair play compliance is a major concern for United.
