Sea Shepherd California:

As many of you have been reading from other news/action alerts: Japan
fishermen and whalers are currently killing thousands of wild dolphins
and small whales along the Japanese coasts, especially in a small,
remote village called Taiji.  This annual slaughter is sanctioned by
the Japanese government and has claimed the lives of hundreds of
thousands of dolphins, and in some areas the dolphins are close to
extinction.

This killing season, the Japanese hunters are increasing their
insidious practice of separating the "good looking" wild dolphins from
their families to be sold into a lifetime of slavery at in-humane
marine parks and swim-with programs at luxury tourist destinations.

But Sea Shepherd is fighting back.   Last year, several Sea Shepherd
crewmembers traveled to Taiji and exposed the slaughter to the world
(made headlines).  And two Sea Shepherd crewmembers were arrested by
Japan for releasing 15 dolphins that were destined for sushi
restaurants and the petfood grinder.  Around the world, there were
international protests at Japanese embassies and consulate offices
which garnered global media attention.  Although Sea Shepherd
crewmembers are now essentially banned from entering Japan, Sea
Shepherd is continuing the pressure on Japan in many ways and demanding
their government to Stop the Slaughter NOW!

On November 19, 2004, Sea Shepherd and other animal protection groups
are coordinating a new international peaceful protest against the
slaughter.  Many of you participated last year, made your voices heard
and gathered hundreds of signatures on protest letters - thank you!
But the dolphins and whales need you again to keep the pressure on
Japan and make this issue a public relations nightmare for the
politicians, as it's much worse for the dolphins and whales.

In addition to your home-made visual signs and caring voice, Sea
Shepherd has a new petition to gather signatures from the pedestrian
foot traffic (download below), and there's a new pre-printed full-color
Taiji fact-sheet to handout to passerby's.   Joining us will be
celebrities and crewmembers who have actually witnessed the slaughter
in Japan.  Capt. Paul Watson, Founder and President of Sea Shepherd, is
scheduled to attend the SF protest where a press conference will be
held.

SIGNS: Bring a home-made flexible posterboard sign with the slogan
"Japan: Stop the Slaughter Now" or "Japan: Stop Killing Dolphins and
Whales" (in addition to the shore drives, Japan kills over a thousand
large whales annually and wants to kill more.  Dramatic high-rez
pictures (download & print) for signs can be found at the bottom of the
main Taiji webpage: http://www.seashepherd.org/taiji/taiji.html

For inspiration and sign ideas from last year's protest, please see
links at the bottom of protest page:
http://www.seashepherd.org/taiji/taiji_worldwide_protest.html
NOTE: Although you may see wood signs and large handles in some of the
pics, please do NOT use wood/metal/plastic for your sign in LA - only
flexible, lightweight posterboard available at most office supply and
drug stores.  I would advise against making handles, but if you do,
please read the LA Muni Code below for guidlines.

PETITIONS:  A new multi-signature petition has been created for 2004.
Please download and print several copies for yourself.  We'll send the
signed petitions to the conulate and prime minister after the protest.
If you have a clipboard, please bring it along with several cheap pens.
I will have some clipboards and pens with me in Los Angeles.  Get the
petition: http://www.seashepherd.org/taiji/taiji_petition.html

HANDOUTS: Sea Shepherd has created and printed an excellent
brochure/fact sheet on Tiaji (see on website) which the organizers will
bring in bulk for you to distribute to passerby's.  You can
view/download the brochure, too:
http://www.seashepherd.org/taiji/download/dolphin_campaign_brochure.pdf

OTHER PROTEST ITEMS:  Organizers will bring inflatable dolphins covered
in fake blood for impact.  If you have a fake dolphin, whale or other
prop or costume that will help with the message, please bring.  No hard
or sharp objects and no weapons!  This is a peaceful protest.  If you
have a Sea Shepherd t-shirt, PLEASE WEAR IT.  I'll bring t-shirts and
hats for sale with me in LA.

ALERT THE MEDIA:  Please visit this page for links to your favorite TV
Radio and paper outlets in Los Angeles area.  If we flood them with
requests, they will cover the story.

ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS: If you can't participate in the LA or SF
demonstrations or want to protest from your home/office, then please
call, fax and email the embassies and consulates to voice your outrage:
 http://www.seashepherd.org/taiji/taiji_letters_addresses.html

Please forward this email to any groups or individuals you think would
like to join us.  Award-winning artist Susan Sarandon has done a Video
PSA which can be viewed at the website http://www.seashepherd.org

REGARDING SIGNS/HANDLES: LOS ANGELES MUNICIPAL CODE
SECTION 55.07

"(a) No person shall carry or possess while participating in any
demonstration, rally, picket line or public assembly, any length of
lumber, wood, or wood lath unless that object is one-fourth inch or
less in thickness and two inches or less in width, or if not generally
rectangular in shape, such object shall not exceed three-quarters inch
in its thickest dimension."   (So basically, you can make a short wood
handle - e.g. 12" long x2" wide x0.25" thick.   Avoid metal or plastic
handles and no sharp edges on the handles or anything!)
