Rate this book

This lively, funny picture book brings to life the Passover tradition of searching for the afikoman—literally. When the mischievous piece of matzoh runs and hides during the seder, all the kids in the family (and even the pet dog!) go hunting for it, through every room in the house. And they’re in for a surprise ending that’s as delightful as this favorite part of Passover.

This is a delightful book. I had heard of the Afikoman game, so it was fun to spend time with your fun diverse family celebrating Passover and see the kids in action. Though I’m not sure I would be up to having six kids and a dog running around my house looking in every room, and opening every drawer, and cabinet. But I did love reading a picture book that through me into the action and made me laugh. I am sure children will love the chaos, too.

I enjoyed looking for the Afikoman on every page along with all the kids. At first, I thought the Afikoman was only on one page until I discovered another one a few pages later, and that made me go back and hunt along with the children to find the Afikoman on each page. Noa did a great job hiding the little man, because I really had to hunt to find him. Kids will love hunting for him, too. Then the icing on the story is the twist at the end, which I don’t want to spoil.

The bottom line is this is a well-written book with lots of fun colorful and detailed illustrations, that will entertain young and old readers. All families will enjoy this book no matter their religion. Parents are sure to find their children will pull this book out to read over and over again. Can read Rebecca's journey with the book on Writing and Illustrating.

A cheeky Afikoman (hidden Matzah) is the main character in this rhyming read aloud Passover (Pesach) picture book for 3-99 year olds.

Rebecca Gardyn Levington’s exuberant rhyme, combined with an enticing refrain, lures readers to turn the page for more action and to find where Afikoman is hiding.

Noa Kelner’s vibrant illustrations show readers the traditional Passover seder dinner, interspersed with hilarious scenes of children, with the help of the family dog, searching for the elusive Afikoman.

A glossary at the beginning of the book explains the Hebrew family words and Passover words used in the story.

This happy book is suitable for children of all backgrounds, as it exudes the joy of a large family get together and community sharing.
Children and their carers will want to read “Afikoman, Where’d You Go?” again and again, and not just at Pesach.

A True Treasure (Hunt!) Afikoman, Where’d You Go is a joyful interactive adventure that celebrates an honored tradition of the Jewish holiday, Passover, in a delightfully delicious Gingerbread Man meets Where’s Waldo way. Rebecca Gardyn Levington’s perfect meter and rhyme builds suspense and elicits giggles, while Noa Kelner’s action-packed, heartwarming illustrations will have readers of all ages clamoring to join in the hunt for the afikoman. And they can! Clever detectives will pore over each picture until they spot the mischievous piece of matzah...but wait! Once they turn the page, the afikoman is off again! Children will anticipate, and chime in on, the recurring line, Afikoman...Afikoman...Afikoman! Where’d you go? Fun for the holiday and beyond!

My kids loved this book!

My sons and I enjoyed reading this story together, learning more about the traditions of Passover, and desperately trying to be the first person to spot the Afikoman on each page! The Afikoman gets harder and harder to spot as the story continues, which is a clever way of engaging kids of all ages. The rhyme is a pleasure to read aloud, with cliffhangers and fun wordplay sprinkled throughout. Readers will enjoy joining in with the refrain throughout the book, too. The illustrations have a slightly Richard Scarry quality, with detailed spreads just asking to be pored over.

A must-have for every bookshelf!

I absolutely LOVED this story about Passover. It’s such a wonderful, interactive story where children and yes, adults too will be searching each page carefully to find Afikoman. The illustrator did such a wonderful job creating characters and beautiful detailed settings with Afikoman carefully hidden. I found myself scanning some of the pages for ages trying to find Afikoman. There are certainly wonderful ways this story can be used in the classroom, I can imagine my students joining in with the refrain, drawing posters, and also wanting to go on their own hunt in the classroom for Afikoman. This is a definitely must read.

Delightful, adorable, informative! This book is a gem! Told in rhyme with a catchy refrain, the story lures the reader to join in the hunt for Afikoman. My inner child came out, determined to find Afikoman hiding on each page. The book is artistically engaging, fun, and educational; sure to be a favorite for children. The illustrations are jammed packed with much to admire - from the open breakout views of the house, to the diversity of children searching, to the silly places Afikoman is hiding. This book is a Where's Waldo? of Passover. The Passover seder can run very long and so there is a bit of a break for the kids to search for the afikoman, a special matzo the hosts have hidden for this very purpose. Whoever finds the afikoman usually gets a prize so this search is taken very seriously by the kiddos (and the parents that get to finish their second or third glass of wine as the kids run about). A great book to introduce Passover or just a great (and tricky!) search-and-find for any family.

Wow. This author continues to impress me! All of her stories are such a delight, and this story is no different. With fantastic rhyme, engaging illustrations, AND being interactive for the readers, this is a story both children and adults will enjoy again and again! Even though my family is not Jewish, my 5 year old and I really loved searching for Afikoman and learning more about Passover! This would be such a great story to introduce Passover to students and I can't imagine all of the fun activities to go along with it!! 5 Stars!!

Afikoman, Where'd You Go? is such a delightful read aloud. Start with the wonderful rhymes by author Rebecca Gardyn Levington pair with illustrations from Now Kelner that are a visual treasure hunt for little ones and the fun repeating refrain and you will want to read this before, during, and after Passover! I enjoyed the Where's Waldo feel of this book but also the Passover elements of the story. A glossary for those unfamiliar with the few Hebrew words makes this very accessible to any reader.

The rhyme is lively and the art detailed in Rebecca Gardyn Levington’s latest book AFIKOMEN, WHERE’D YOU GO? Noa Kelner draws a great big house with details of a busy life in every room. Her drawings will entice children in as there are so many details and so much humor. Is Afikoman in the bathroom? Is Afikoman in the kitchen? And what is that dog up to? Every page requires careful study in this interactive book that asks the reader to join in searching for the elusive after seder “afikoMAN.” Fun for all.

I love a good rhyming text (especially one with a refrain), and this book delivers both of those things, along with charming illustrations and a sense of intrigue. (Where DID that tricky piece of matzo go?) The kids in your life will surely also enjoy spotting it in each spread--a few of them are quite tricky! 🕵️

An energetic, colorful celebration of the hiding (and finding) of the afikoman at the Passover seder and the importance and fun of being in community.

Levington's rhyme is fun and engaging, and I just love the refrain. The illustrations are totally inviting. Kids will linger on every page spread trying to find afikoman! The surprise ending feels both joyful and earned. I can't wait to share this book with the little ones in my life coming as we come up to Passover!

I was fortunate to receive an e-arc of this book, and I absolutely loved it. SUCH a fun book! Kids will have a great time looking for the Afikoman on each page. Some pages are super tricky, and some are easier, so I'd say it's great for as young as 2, and as old as 6 or 7 :) The rhyming text pairs well with the illustrations, too! I loved it so much I ended up buying a copy for a relative!

This book is SO fun!! It has a great refrain that will have kids chanting along. The Afikoman is hidden on every spread. It's just hard enough to find that it can be an engaging game for a wide age group. Bubbly text and great illustrations. We don't celebrate Passover but I know my kids would have loved this book and would have especially enjoyed the interactive element.
