A total of 3,59,500 cattle will be vaccinated against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) across the district during the special drive to be held till November 12.

District Collector C. Kathiravan inaugurated the camp at Semmampalayam village at Villarasampatti here on Monday in the presence of Zonal Joint Director Kulandaisamy and other officials. As part of the 17th round of FMD, the Department of Animal Husbandry along with Milk Cooperative Societies will be conducting the camp across the district, during which cows and buffaloes will be vaccinated. A total of 118 teams were formed to carry out the vaccination from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Each team comprising a veterinary assistant surgeon, a cattle inspector and an animal husbandry assistant, will visit each village panchayat on a specific date and vaccinate the cattle. The campaign to vaccinate against this viral infection was held once in six months, as affected cattle becomes unproductive and there would be drastic reduction in milk yield, said officials.

Blisters inside the mouth and on the feet of the cattle, increase in temperature, and complete cessation of milk yield are the symptoms of the disease that gets transmitted easily between animals under unhygienic surroundings in the sheds.

Camps will be held in Corporation, four Municipalities, 42 Town Panchayats, 14 Panchayat Unions, 375 revenue villages, 225 village panchayats and 3,190 hamlets in the district.
