LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - A 27-year-old woman is accused of shooting and killing a man near Spring Mountain and Fort Apache roads Tuesday, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department says.

According to a release Wednesday, police suspect Kayla Alery as the suspect in this case.

Police said that they responded to the 3600 block of Fort Apache Road after dispatchers received a call of a shooting inside an apartment complex just after 4 p.m.

Officers located a man – identified as 41-year-old Raul Cardoza – near the entrance inside a white van. Police provided medical aid until medical personnel arrived on the scene.

He was transported by medical personnel to the hospital and died from his injuries.

Lt. Jason Johannson said that the victim was present because of his job as a carpet cleaner and he intended to provide an estimate to a potential customer. He said that the suspect shot the victim while he was sitting in the driver’s seat of his van. Police have “no indication at all” that the victim had any prior interaction with the suspect.

Alery allegedly fled the area on foot.

“This appears to be a random shooting,” the lieutenant explained.

Alery was booked into the Clark County Detention Center for open murder with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, and several other felony charges. She is also facing a charge of battery by a prisoner.

According to court records, she has also faced charges of driving with a revoked license in 2022, domestic battery in 2021, and grand larceny charges in 2018. Alery was released from prison on parole in December 2023, where she was serving a sentence for two arson-related charges.

Alery is due in court for an initial appearance on Thursday, March 28.
