Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Oct. 21

In a vote that ended Oct. 21, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through Oct. 16.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports.

Mercy Health is the presenting sponsor for the Cincinnati.com Sports Awards and Athlete of the Week.

Please note: We pulled a ballot with voting issues. A winner still may be declared if those issues are resolved. The rest of the winners are:

Ohio football team of the week: Goshen – In its first victory since week two, Goshen earned a 56-19 victory at Batavia.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team of the week: Lawrenceburg – In a playoff preview, Lawrenceburg shut out South Dearborn 31-0.

Ohio fall boys team of the week: St. Xavier cross country – The Bombers won another GCL South title, scoring 21 points while placing four of the top five.

Ohio fall girls team of the week: Ursuline Academy volleyball – The Lions ended their regular season with an 18-3 mark after 3-0 sweeps over Notre Dame and Centerville.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall boys team of the week: Ryle soccer – The Raiders clinched the Ninth Region title after beating St. Henry 5-0, Highlands 2-1 and Covington Catholic 2-0 in the tournament.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana fall girls team of the week: Bishop Brossart soccer – Bishop Brossart is 10th Region champions after topping Pendleton County 10-0, George Rogers Clark 5-2 and Campbell County 1-0.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross country runner of the week: Logan Hicks, East Central – Along with teammate Bradyn Hatton, he qualified for this weekend’s semi-state meet.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross country runner of the week: Annabelle McDonald, East Central – She finished sixth behind teammate Callie Bentley (second) to help the Trojans win their first-ever regional championship, qualifying for this weekend’s semi-state meet.

Ohio boys cross country runner of the week: Noah Bunting, Clermont Northeastern – The senior won the Southern Buckeye Athletic and Academic Conference title with a time of 17:06.00, helping CNE to a team title.

Ohio girls cross country runner of the week: Joyeuse Muhorakeye, Aiken – The senior won the Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference Championship meet Oct. 15 with a time of 21:05.00.

Field hockey player of the week: Kincade Givens, Indian Hill – The sophomore goalie’s team has supported and encouraged her from day one to help her find her voice and wow it has paid off. Kincade has had some great shutouts, eight, against some fierce experienced competition. She won’t back down as she pushes herself to do her best; with this hard work, she has had some incredible saves.

Ohio big school football player of the week: Kyle Koch, Lebanon – Koch had two catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns in Lebanon’s 35-20 win over Walnut Hills.

Ohio small school football player of the week: Grant Brown, Clermont Northeastern – Brown had five catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns in a 50-22 win over East Clinton.

Ohio big school boys golfer of the week: Jake Wittenauer, Little Miami – Wittenauer finished in a second-place tie at districts while securing an individual qualifier spot in the Division I state meet.

Ohio small school boys golfer of the week: Josh Winhusen, Middletown Christian – Winhusen shot a two-round 149, finishing as individual runner-up of the OHSAA Division III state tournament.

Ohio girls golfer of the week: Clare Yeazell, Lakota East – Yeazell finished tied for fifth overall in the Division I district tournament, picking up the final state qualifying spot.

Ohio boys big school soccer player of the week: Reilly Queenan, Sycamore – The junior scored two game-winners, one in a 2-1 win over Oak Hills and the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Princeton.

Ohio boys small school soccer player of the week: Eric Slavey, Reading – The senior scored two goals and assisted on three more in a 10-2 win over Purcell Marian.

Ohio girls big school soccer player of the week: Cayla Enzweiler, Western Brown - On Oct. 6 against Wilmington High School, Cayla broke the single-game assist record for Western Brown with 5 assists in a 10-1 win. The previous record had stood for 23 years.

Ohio girls small school soccer player of the week: Kylyn Little, Deer Park – The sophomore doubled her career goal total with two net finders in a win over Finneytown.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys soccer player of the week: Tyler Smith, Bishop Brossart – He scored the only goal for the Mustangs in their 2-1 win over George Rogers Clark in the 10th Region semifinals, which the team won in penalty kicks.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls soccer player of the week: Sophie Decker, Simon Kenton – The senior helped the Pioneers finish as Eighth Region runner-up to top-ranked South Oldham. She had five goals and two assists in the regional tournament and finished with 15 goals and 19 assists for the season. The team captain was named to the all-tournament team and will play for Marian University.

Girls singles tennis player of the week: Sophia Thompson, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy - After cruising into the district final, she won the Division II district title in comeback fashion 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Girls doubles tennis players of the week: Caroline Soller and Cece Kuwatch, Mariemont - They reached the quarterfinal of the Division II district tournament before falling to the eventual runner-up.

Ohio big school volleyball player of the week: Kate McMullen, Oak Hills – The senior had 13 kills and four aces in Oak Hills’ four-set win over Fairmont.

Ohio small school volleyball player of the week: Maggie Durham, McNicholas – The senior had six aces and 12 assists in McNicholas’ five-set win over Holy Cross.

Northern Kentucky volleyball player of the week: Azaria Sweet, Boone County – She recorded her 1,000th career dig Oct. 10 against Highlands.
