Welcome to Spring Good News Letter

Is it Spring Yet?

Here we are in the mixed month of March.  In 3-weeks, we'll be looking forward toward summer instead of being mired in this crazy winter we're having.  March is a busy and exciting time of year.
We here in southern Ontario are not out of it yet.  Some of the biggest snowfalls I've seen have been in March so I'll keep the suntan lotion in the drawer for now. 😊

My mother celebrated her 95th birthday on the 18th of Feb.  It was super to see my brothers, the children, grandchildren and ... 7 Great Grandchildren doting on her.  I haven't seen so many smiles, so much laughter and comradery in one place in years.  We ate pizza and drank ginger ale and in the end, left my mother with a smile that glowed.  My brother took the 9 & 5 candle numbers on the cake and turned it around to say 59.  We all laughed and said, "oh yes, please turn back time over 3 decades? I wonder, are we actually able to make changes that can lighten us up, by changing in this moment❓ Perhaps we can.

As I think about winter, and especially this one we're going through with a record highs and low, rain, freezing rain, snow and sleet, it is much like a metaphor for our lives. We have our ups and downs, we weather emotional storms, and give thanksgiving for the happy times.  Who said, "Life is supposed to be easy"?  It could be - if we take the time to grow from our mistakes, then we won't keep seeing the same lessons coming back at us!! Know what I mean?  To make a positive change in our lives, the first thing we have to do is choose to make the change.  They usually don't just happen and there is almost always a lot of soul-searching and hard work on your part. 2-years ago, my husband stopped drinking alcohol and it has changed his life for the better in more ways than I can count.  I know it wasn't easy for him and he is the first to admit that he still gets anxious once in a while, but he deals with it in his own way, and it works.  This year he has given up chocolate for Lent.  After a week, I can see he has lost weight, his complexion is better and he's sleeping longer and less interrupted.  We'll see what happens after Easter because my man loves his chocolate.

I've been there many times. I finally got back to basics by accepting the things I cannot change. However, I can change things in me, and when we make positive changes, we send out waves of positive energy that affect everyone and everything around us, including our pets, our co-workers, even our gardens and plants
Making positive changes in one's life can be daunting.  It can also be a very lonely road if you choose to travel it alone.  It's certainly possible to do it by oneself, but it's a much easier when you have the support of a loved one.  Being brave and humbly accepting change is how we grow.

Namaste,
Karen

Herb of the Month

Stinging Nettle

Most of us have experienced, or at least heard of Stinging Nettle.  For those of you who have never had the pleasure of contact with Nettle leaves, I can attest it is a very painful (in my case) few hours.  But I can also say that, dried and put into a tincture or drank as a tea, Nettle leaf is one of the best herbs for the entire urinary tract.  Nettle is full of Vitamins and Minerals.  The leaves are also helpful in helping to reduce an enlarged prostate in men.  Additionally, Nettle is a key ingredient in certain Anti-Dandruff shampoos.
Nettle isn't for everyone including people taking meds for High Blood Pressure, Diabetes and Inflammation.

Note from Brian

"Spring is just a smile away - laughing at a winter's day."  It sure didn't feel like spring this morning as I dealt with some of the heaviest snow I've ever had to shovel.  The neighbour who at 80 years of age and who is usually out with his snowblower on days like these had a mechanical breakdown this morning and the old gal gave up the ghost.  Fortunately, there are 4 or 5 other machines on the street, but that good man across the street has been doing the old folks on both sides of me when it gets too much for these old bones.  I'm sure the others will be just as generous.
With the passing of March 1st, spring is just around the corner.  Now is the time I need to start planning my priorities for the next 6-8 months. Judging by the speed the last 2-months have flown by, the next 6 will be gone before I know it.
Why do you suppose time feels faster as we age?  I have a theory that's likely bunk, but here it is anyway:  When you're 5 years old, 1-year represents 20% or your life, and probably 50% of what you can recall.  At 10 it's 10% and at 50 it's 2%. Just a thought.
Last year Karen and I ate green and yellow beans grown in a 4' x 4' piece of our garden from mid June well into October and still have 3-bags in the freezer that Karen par-boiled and froze.  We still have tons of frozen Zucchini that I use with black bananas to make some really, outrageous muffins that include Gluten Free flour with rice that I milled myself.
I also want to update the front yard.  We have a bush that's supposed to be - oh - maybe 3-feet in diameter that hasn't been trimmed for a while.  Also, I think the squirrels might have been on to me when I planted all those bulbs 2-falls ago.  The lawn starts out nice, but once the leaves on the tree are in, there's just not enough sunlight.  You can see burn marks around the border of what's in the sun and what isn't.  It's a conundrum.
I don't really have a lot of thoughts to share at the moment so I'll bid you a good month of March and we'll see if there's more inside this noggin next month.
Cheers,
Brian

With the advent of Spring in a few short weeks, here's a song by the Beatles, written by George Harrison.  Prior to Abbey Road, most of Harrison's work, with a few notable exceptions, wasn't taken as seriously as his bandmates Lennon and McCartney.  Of course we all know that once the Beatles went their separate ways, he blossomed into a superstar in his own right.

Here Comes the Sun

Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right

Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here

Here comes the sun,  here comes the sun
And I say it's all right

Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here

Here comes the sun,  here comes the sun
And I say it's all right

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes

Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been clear

Here comes the sun,  here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
