Description of Work

This is a trainee level technician located in the Division 2 Greenville Construction office which involves technical work supporting higher level technicians or engineers in construction inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, erosion control, and construction traffic control. This position requires the performance of a wide variety of standardized and non-standardized tests and assignments in compiling, analyzing, computing, editing, and processing field data. This work involves limited decision making and use of judgment. The successful applicant must perform a full range of calculations and computations. This position is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. 

The chosen applicant will be hired at a salary of $33,000.  A six-month salary progression will be awarded for 24 months to employees upon successful completion of all trainee steps.  A salary of $34,500 will be given at six months, $36,400 at twelve months, $38,500 at eighteen months and $41,300 at twenty-four months.

Applicants meeting the full requirements of an Engineering Tech I, (“Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience”) will be hired as fully qualified.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants chosen for the trainee program will be required to have a close visual acuity to use testing instruments to read plan details, to make accurate field measurements and to inspect roadway and structure components. Some knowledge of surveying, highway construction or design and general knowledge of mathematical functions is needed. Employees in this position may be exposed to high traffic volumes, may work at heights over water or traffic, and may have to climb on the substructure and superstructure of bridges. This position must be able to safely perform manual tasks involving the bush axe and other tools on steep and rough terrain. This position is expected to carry testing equipment over rough and steep terrain. This position will be required to lift and carry at least 50 pounds. This successful applicant for this position is expected safely work high above ground, safely operate a motor vehicle, be proficient in record keeping, and engineering testing equipment. A Valid NC driver's license is preferred.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school education or General Educational Development Diploma.
