Enquirer names Cincinnati high school athletes of the week for May 6

In a vote that ended May 6, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through May 1.

The winter 2022 certificates have been mailed and should have arrived at athletic departments.

Once they reach the schools, please remember to send a picture of winning athletes with their certificates for the photo gallery to mlaughman@enquirer.com. 

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs each week during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Send your nominations by Monday morning for this week's high school sports action.

The winners are:

Ohio boys spring team of the week: Elder volleyball – The Panthers went 6-0 over the week, beating Oak Hills, Beavercreek and St. Xavier before Saturday’s Centerville Elite Tournament where Elder again beat St. Xavier with Liberty and Hilliard Darby.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys spring team of the week: Bishop Brossart track and field – At its Bishop Brossart Gold Medal meet, the Mustangs scored 143 points to win the event.

Ohio girls spring team of the week: Oak Hills track and field – Oak Hills scored 145.50 points to take first place in the Ross Invitational on April 29.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls spring team of the week: Lawrenceburg track and field – The Tigers' 4-x-100 group set a record at the Vevay Media Group Invitational with a time of 52.68.

Ohio big school baseball player: John Mairn, Little Miami – Against Walnut Hills, Winton Woods and Kings, the senior combined to go 6-for-7 with three doubles, four RBIs and four runs scored.

Ohio small school baseball player: Pryce Murphy, Eastern – He was the winning pitcher, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a triple. He also had 2 RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. On the mound, he went 4.1 innings with 2 strikeouts in the 6-5 win over North Adams April 28.

Northern Kentucky baseball player: Landen Schwartz, Conner – He pitched five innings, combining with Carson Wood for a no-hitter against Scott April 29. Schwartz struck out five while allowing one earned run.

Boys big-school lacrosse: Colten Simkins, Lakota East – The senior was 89% on face-off wins against Lebanon. Colten had 16 ground balls and 2 goals in the game.

Boys small-school lacrosse: Hayden Wentz, Indian Hill – The senior had 6 goals and 3 ground balls in the 17-6 win over La Salle April 27, adding four more goals, an assist and 2 ground balls in the 13-7 win over Anderson April 25. In a loss to Louisville Trinity April 29, he had 2 goals and 2 assists to go with one ground ball.

Girls big-school lacrosse: Winnie Cha, Ursuline – The sophomore led Ursuline to a victory over Girls Greater Catholic League rival Mount Notre Dame last Monday with five goals.

Girls small-school lacrosse: Riley Wolf, Fenwick – The junior had 3 goals and 2 assists in the 12-6 win over Oak Hills April 30.

Northern Kentucky lacrosse: Carson Grizowic, Walton-Verona – He had 4 goals and 1 assist in the 10-9 loss to Covington Catholic April

Ohio big school softball player: Audrey Gildea, Mount Notre Dame – The freshman went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in Mount Notre Dame’s 9-2 win over Mercy McAuley April 27.

Ohio small school softball player: Grace Prewitt, Eastern Brown – She went 4-for-4 at the plate and had a no-hitter on the mound in a 2-0 win over Whiteoak April 26.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana softball player: Morgan Chalk, Scott – She was named the MVP of the Holmes Bulldog Bash after collecting seven hits and nine RBIs in three wins, three RBIs in each win.

Ohio singles tennis player: Yusif Rustom, Milford – He got a first-singles win April 27 in a 3-2 team loss to Moeller. He has an 11-1 record, the most wins in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference.

Ohio doubles tennis: John Corbett-Ethan Blatt, Seven Hills – The first doubles team won their Flight B of the Coaches Classic, helping Seven Hills to a second-place team finish.

Northern Kentucky boys tennis: Nick Wittrock, Campbell County – He got the first singles win in the 5-0 team win over Simon Kenton April 26.

Ohio boys big-school track and field athlete: Grant McWaters, Loveland – He won the 110-meter hurdles and the high jump at the April 29 Loveland Invitational.

Ohio boys small-school track and field athlete: Cerrious Boyd, Indian Hill – The senior won the 200- and 400-meter dashes at the Goshen High School Invitational April 29.

Northern Kentucky boys track and field athlete: Deion Keller, Campbell County – He tied for first in the pole vault at the Campbell County championships.

Ohio girls big-school track and field athlete: Julia Hageman, Oak Hills – She won the 800- and 1,600-meter races at the Ross High School Invitational April 29.

Ohio girls small-school track and field athlete: Samantha Ringhand, New Richmond – She won the pole vault and long jump at the Little Miami Invitational April 28.

Northern Kentucky girls track and field athlete: Katelyn Routhier, South Dearborn – The senior won the 100-meter hurdles April 29 at the Seven Hills Invitational. She won the same event at the Taylor Invitational April 27.

Boys volleyball: Carson Hill, Lakota East – The sophomore setter had a season-high 40 assists at Lakota West and also had 27 assists in a two-set sweep of Milford.
