1. He was born with a bipartite patella, meaning his kneecap is in fact two separate pieces of bone connected by tissue. Is still aches when overused and he has to treat it carefully during tournaments.

2. Andy started playing tennis at the age of three, and remembers having a mini-racket at the age of two.

3. His older brother, Jamie, is also a professional tennis player and the pair have often been an effective doubles partnership.

4. It isn't just tennis that comes naturally to Andy – he was a keen footballer and at the age of 13 he turned down the chance to play for Glasgow Rangers.

5. Football apparently runs in the family, as his grandfather played for Scottish side Hibernian.

6. Andy and Jamie attended Dunblane primary school, and were present at the time of the Dunblane Massacre in 1996, when Thomas Hamilton shot and killed 16 children and their teacher.

7. Some of the victims of the massacre were his friends' brothers and sisters. He and Jamie stayed safe by hiding under a desk in the headmaster's office.

8. Andy had previously attended a youth group where Hamilton was a helper and Andy's mother had given him lifts in her car.

9. He moved away from his family at the age of 15 to pursue his career, moving to the famous Sanchez-Castal tennis academy in Barcelona.

10. The move paid off as Andy won the US Open boys title in 2004 at the age of 17.

11. Later that year he was named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year, but almost missed the ceremony after getting locked in a bathroom.

12. He became Britain's youngest ever Davis Cup player when he made his debut aged 17 in 2005.

13. Having turned professional, he reached his first ATP tour final in only his eighth tournament, losing to Roger Federer in Bangkok.

14. He was only 18 when he broke into the world top 100, becoming the youngest British player to do so since 1974.

15. Later that year he made it into the top 50 for the first time, with only Bjorn Borg, Lleyton Hewitt, Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick having managed it younger.

16. Away from tennis, Andy is a keen racer and spends many of his days off on the go-kart track

17. He still enjoys football and supports Wolves, thanks to the influence of Davis Cup coach John Lloyd, and Hibernian, his grandfather's former club.

18. Despite having a reputation for appearing humourless, he is a fan of comedy and his favourite show is The Office.
