Armed Forces member dies after suspected ragging in Miri


KUCHING: An Armed Forces member died early Monday (March 24) morning, believed to be from internal injuries, after allegedly being abused by seniors at a camp in Miri.

The 21-year-old soldier from Puchong, Selangor, was pronounced dead at Miri Hospital, Berita Harian reported on Wednesday (March 26).

Sarawak Police commissioner Comm Datuk Mancha Ata confirmed the incident but gave no further details, including whether any suspects had been detained for investigation.

Quoting a source, Berita Harian reported that the victim was awoken by two senior personnel at 2.15am on Monday for sahur (pre-dawn meal).

However, before eating, they allegedly ordered him into a "commando rest" position of balancing his forehead on the ground with hands behind his back for two minutes, followed by 20 push-ups.

The victim, who was said to be sweating, then stood up and immediately fainted.

The incident was reported to a corporal in charge of the barracks, who sent the victim to Miri Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3.05am.
