Learn More About COVID H.E.L.P. Illinois!
COVID H.E.L.P. Illinois provides free, online legal assistance to people in Illinois who are dealing with housing issues, unemployment and other legal problems caused by the pandemic.

COVID HELP (Housing & Economic Loss Prevention) was created by a collaboration of legal aid organizations and received the American Bar Association’s 2021 Louis M. Brown Select Award for Legal Access.

COVID HELP Illinois provides both immediate and reliable information about evictions and housing and can also connect people to free legal services in their area. Though Illinois Governor Pritzker may extend the eviction moratorium scheduled to end on April 3, it is critical that people start making plans now and get the advice and help they need.

Please share this video far and wide so that anyone who needs free legal resources during the pandemic does not have barrier to access.

Thank you!
CARPLS Statement on Atlanta Tragedy
The killing of eight people—six women of Asian descent—last week in Atlanta, Georgia is not only tragic, it is a reminder of the latest example of race-based violence against Asian communities in the U.S.

CARPLS condemns this act of violence, and we have profound sympathy towards the families of those killed. We stand with those who have protested and those who have opened up a bigger dialogue about this systemic issue.

We cannot ignore in this devastating story that many of these women were immigrants, who came to the U.S. in search of a better life. Many Asian American women are wrongfully stigmatized and viewed as “lesser than” in low-wage work. And in particular, many women who work in the massage industry are vulnerable to sexual and physical violence.

Especially in the last year, our country has had hard conversations about race, gender, socioeconomic class, and more. These conversations are so important, but it’s only the first step. It’s simply not enough to stop there. Action, support, and change for the communities that are so often left out of conversations, or are treated with contempt, needs to start now.
Dina Merrell: Goodbye to Chicago's
Legal Aid Trailblazer
After a 25+ year career in public interest, Dina Merrell is moving on from The Chicago Bar Foundation (CBF) to new adventures. She is a quiet leader who prefers to stay out of the limelight. We are certain that this warm sendoff will embarrass her, but we believe it is long overdue.

Dina is a graduate of IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law and was instrumental in developing their Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) that was established in 2009 for Chicago-Kent alumni. Michelle Vodenik, Senior Director of Public Interest at the law school, recounts Dina’s involvement:

“Dina Merrell was an integral part of LRAP. We counted on Dina’s expertise, as she knew the in’s and out’s of developing funding programs to support lawyers who commit their lives to public interest law. Dina continued her service on the LRAP committee for eight years and has left us with a lasting legacy.

In addition, Dina was well known for mentoring and supporting the next generation of public interest leaders—she was always willing to be a resource to all who asked, and her commitment to public interest law was unwavering. We are so proud to have such a committed public interest leader as an alumnus of Chicago-Kent.”

That is just one small example of the tremendous impact Dina has made in her legal career overall, and particularly in her time at the CBF. Through 16 years of work at the CBF, Dina Merrell built a following of admirers. Dina connected donors, board members and volunteers within the legal aid community to so many opportunities through her careful grant making and relationship development and played a lead role in implementing a number of innovative programs that have made big improvements in access to justice and made our pro bono and legal aid community better for all concerned. We collected only a small portion of praise from her friends and colleagues.

CARPLS Client Gets Unemployment Benefits After Long Wait
Rowan applied for pandemic-related unemployment benefits (PUA) the summer of 2020 after she was laid off from multiple jobs, and she subsequently had to move back to her hometown. For months, despite giving all the correct information to IDES, she did not receive benefits. Rowan decided to call CARPLS. After talking with our attorneys and a few more steps, Rowan was able to get her benefits a few days later.
