Sept. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Press Release – Overland Park, KS and St. Paul, MN – September 6, 2011–  ARMA International and the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) announced today the formation of an alliance to focus on helping organizations understand the importance of overall information governance, the benefits it provides and how to begin the process of achieving it.

Both organizations have made considerable contributions to raise awareness of information governance issues. ARMA International has recognized the need by developing the GARP ® maturity model. EDRM has recognized the need by developing the Information Governance Reference Model (IGRM), an entirely new reference model separate and distinct from the model developed specifically for electronic discovery. Working together these two globally recognized and highly respected groups will collaborate on initiatives to help organizations address policies and practices.

“Content is growing at an ever increasing rate of speed.  Electronically Stored Information (ESI) can be found in many different repositories and in many different formats.  There is a significant need for a road map organizations can use to begin to get their house in order” said Galina Datskovsky, President of ARMA International.

A plethora of information exists throughout an enterprise, created and stored in different formats across multiple technologies, and exponentially growing by the moment. This information is the lifeblood of any organization as it is used to communicate to customers, power mission-critical operations, and drive strategic business decisions. As this information continues to grow, organizations require technology that is able to unify information scattered across an organization, make sense of the data, and instantly connect people with the relevant information that is required to drive business success.

ARMA International’s Maturity Model
The Maturity Model for Information Governance begins to paint a more complete picture of what effective information governance looks like. It is based on the eight GARP ® principles as well as a foundation of standards, best practices, and legal/regulatory requirements. The maturity model goes beyond a mere statement of the principles by beginning to define characteristics of various levels of recordkeeping programs. For each principle, the maturity model associates various characteristics that are typical for each of the five levels in the model.

EDRM’s Information Governance Reference Model
The mission of EDRM’s Information Governance Reference Model (IGRM) project is to provide a common, practical, flexible framework to help organizations develop and implement effective and actionable information management programs. The IGRM Project aims to offer guidance to Legal, IT, Records Management, line-of-business leaders and other business stakeholders within organizations. The Project seeks to facilitate dialogue among these stakeholders by providing a common language and reference for discussion and decision-making based on the needs of the organization.

"We are pleased to partner with ARMA International, which is committed to the importance of information governance" said Tom Gelbmann, co-founder of the EDRM "We at EDRM recognize that effective holistic governance is the foundation to efficient eDiscovery.  This partnership signifies the broad acceptance we are seeing across industry, not just in support of eDiscovery but for all business drivers enterprise wide."

About EDRM
Launched in May 2005, the EDRM Project was created to address the lack of standards and guidelines in the e-discovery market – a problem identified in the 2003 and 2004 Socha-Gelbmann Electronic Discovery surveys as a major concern for vendors and consumers alike. The completed reference model provides a common, flexible and extensible framework for the development, selection, evaluation and use of e-discovery products and services. Expanding on the base defined with the Reference Model, the EDRM projects now include nine projects including the Information Governance Reference Model project. Over the past five years, the EDRM project has included more than 230 organizations, including 150 service and software providers, 57 law firms, three industry groups and 22 corporations involved with e-discovery. Information about EDRM is available at http://www.edrm.net.
