Intel, alongside its partners, unveiled the latest LGA-1851 socket at the Embedded World 2024 event. This announcement came with the introduction of the new Meteor Lake and Raptor Lake processors designed for socketed systems operating at the edge. This marks Intel’s debut of Meteor Lake on an LGA socket, a move that had been planned previously but was eventually postponed.

The LGA-1851 socket is slated for integration into the mobile/desktop CPU hybrid Meteor Lake-PS series, adapted for diffrent applications than consumer-grade CPUs. These processors are intended to power various embedded systems. The first motherboards featuring the LGA-1851 socket were showcased at Embedded World, but they have very little to do with the Intel 800 series lineup scheduled for release in the latter half of the year.

ComputerBase, who attended the expo, shared the first image of the LGA-1851 socket. Intel has affirmed that its size matches that of the LGA-1700 (45×37.5mm). However, measures have been implemented to prevent older CPUs from being compatible with the new socket, such as shifted locking lugs. Moreover, the LGA-1851 socket comes with 151 more pins than its predecessor, rendering older CPUs physically and functionally incompatible.

The LGA-1700 socket had its shortcomings, enthusiasts often resorted to anti-bending brackets to improve the contact area between the CPU and cooler. These brackets, priced around $8 are commonly used. Whether the newer socket will require such accessories remains to be seen, and will likely be confirmed once the Meteor Lake-PS or Arrow Lake-S platform ends up in the hands of reviewers before launch.
