This position will function as a Transportation Worker II in the Division 5 Traffic Unit.  The primary purpose of this position is to install signs in the performance of maintenance activities involving the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic control devices along the state road network for Division 5, which includes seven counties.  Perform various maintenance related activities including, but not limited to: posting of various regulatory ordinances (speed limits, no parking zones, etc.), installation of traffic warning signs, flagging, install historical makers, repair/replacement of damaged/weathered signs, speed zones, vegetation removal, installation of road closures and properly signing detour routes.  Performs annual nighttime sign reviews for the condition of sign reflectivity and maintains proper documentation for use in developing annual maintenance plan.  Perform snow and ice control operation during storm conditions.  Maintain inventory of all signs and materials kept on the truck such as posts, nuts, bolts, and specialized hardware for historical markers and decorative sign posts.  May be required to perform heavy lifting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience in at least two pieces of Category B equipment (paint truck, pre-line paint machine, asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver , skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device)
  • Experience in the installation of traffic control such as detours and lane closures
  • Experience in Basic Incident Response
  • Experience in Customer Service
  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used

Additional Expectations:

Visual acuity is required.  Safety toe footwear is required.  Able to communicate effectively with people.  Must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions and walk and stand for long periods of time on uneven and sloping terrain and around high volumes of traffic.  May be required to perform heavy lifting. Position may require evening and weekend work.  Must be able to legally operate a class A commercial motor vehicle within 360 days of hire.  Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position.  As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed, allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

 

Necessary Special Requirements 

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
