Dear Greenburgh Community:

I want to focus this update on an important topic that I know is on the minds of many. You have likely heard news reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials being in neighboring towns this week. Greenburgh CSD faculty, along with community members, have expressed concern about the potential of ICE coming to our schools and/or requesting information about our students and their families. To be clear, we have not heard of any instances of ICE officials coming to or contacting schools.

For your understanding, New York State has issued specific guidance on safeguarding the rights of immigrant students. Earlier this week, I provided this information to all administrators, faculty and staff about the protocols to follow should any interactions with or requests from ICE officials occur.

I want to reiterate that the District’s goal has been and will continue to be to keep our schools safe, inclusive, and supportive spaces for all of us. I have been in contact with the District’s attorney and will continue participating in the ongoing dialogue among my superintendent colleagues throughout the county about this topic. It is these conversations, along with the guidance from New York State, that have helped inform the aforementioned protocols.

Estimada Comunidad de Greenburgh:

Quiero centrar esta actualización en un tema importante que sé que está en la mente de muchos. Probablemente haya escuchado informes noticiosos sobre funcionarios del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) que estuvieron en ciudades vecinas esta semana. El personal docente de Greenburgh CSD, junto con miembros de la comunidad, han expresado su preocupación sobre la posibilidad de que ICE venga a nuestras escuelas y/o solicite información sobre nuestros estudiantes y sus familias. Para ser claros, no hemos oído hablar de ningún caso en el que funcionarios de ICE hayan visitado o contactado a las escuelas.

Para su comprensión, el Estado de Nueva York ha emitido una guía específica sobre la protección de los derechos de los estudiantes inmigrantes. A principios de esta semana, proporcioné esta información a todos los administradores, profesores y personal sobre los protocolos a seguir en caso de que se produzca alguna interacción o solicitud de funcionarios de ICE.

Quiero reiterar que el objetivo del Distrito ha sido y seguirá siendo mantener nuestras escuelas seguras, inclusivas y con espacios de apoyo para todos nosotros. He estado en contacto con el abogado del Distrito y continuaré participando en el diálogo continuo entre mis colegas superintendentes en todo el condado sobre este tema. Son estas conversaciones, junto con la orientación del estado de Nueva York, las que han ayudado a informar los protocolos antes mencionados.
