Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, May 19

In a vote that ended May 19, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through May 14.

Winter and spring winners through April 7 should have received certificates through the athletic departments at this point.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners.

Ohio baseball team of the week: Princeton – The Vikings ended a five-game losing skid with a 4-3 win over Western Brown before topping Batavia 6-0 the next day.

Northern Kentucky baseball team of the week: Bishop Brossart – Bishop Brossart ended the regular season on a four-game winning streak after topping Covington Catholic 8-7 and Lloyd Memorial 16-0.

Ohio softball team of the week: Fenwick – The Falcons won a pair of postseason games, topping both Monroe and Alter in 10-0 shutouts.

Northern Kentucky softball team of the week: Villa Madonna – The Vikings took three of four over the week, beating Newport 19-4 before a doubleheader sweep of Ludlow 17-2 and 30-10.

Boys spring team of the week: Walnut Hills volleyball – Walnut Hills swept Mason in three sets before upsetting Elder to reach the regional semifinals.

Girls spring team of the week: Ursuline Academy track – The Lions scored 163 points in the Girls Greater Catholic League meet to win its first conference title since 2019.

Ohio big-school baseball player of the week: Will Hendon, St. Xavier - The senior went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs in St. Xavier’s 14-8 win over Troy May 13.

Ohio small-school baseball player of the week: Vlad Johns, Cincinnati Country Day - Over his last two starts, the senior has tossed 13 shutout innings in wins over Norwood and Purcell Marian. Since his nomination, he had a perfect game in the first round of the postseason against Finneytown May 15.

Northern Kentucky baseball player of the week: Gage Nussbaum, Lloyd – He went 3-for-3 in a win over Villa Madonna, then pitched a complete game against Grant County while allowing five hits and two runs.

Ohio big-school softball player of the week: Halle Klaiber, Badin – The junior had three hits in each of Badin’s two postseason wins to begin the sectional tournament. Against Clinton-Massie, she had a home run and two RBIs. She got the win in the circle in both games, striking out 10 and allowing three runs combined.

Ohio small-school softball player of the week: Cloey Sattler, Batavia – The senior went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBIs in the 17-6 win over CHCA May 9.

Northern Kentucky softball player of the week: Josie Hollingsworth, Boone County – In three wins last week, she went 5-8 with a double and two RBIs.

Ohio boys big-school lacrosse player of the week: Noah Smith, Moeller – He had three goals in the 15-9 win over Elder May 10, all in the first half, and had another three in the first half of the May 12 win over Mariemont.

Ohio boys small-school lacrosse player of the week: Luke Brennaman, Mariemont – The senior had 11 saves with three ground balls and two caused turnovers in the 12-11 win over Elder May 8.

Ohio girls big-school lacrosse player of the week: Alexis Denman, Mercy McAuley – The senior had five goals, five assists, seven ground balls, one caused turnover against Princeton High School Monday, May 8.

Ohio girls small-school lacrosse player of the week: Riya Jain, Wyoming – The junior, who leads the Cincinnati Hills League in caused turnovers (19), made an impact on offense and defense in a 17-9 loss to Kings. She had four goals, one assist, two draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Northern Kentucky boys lacrosse player of the week: Carson Grizovic, Walton-Verona – The senior had eight goals, one assist and five ground balls in the 15-1 win over Cooper May 12.

Milford player Yusif Rustom was voted the cincinnati.com tennis player of the week for May 19.

Ohio boys singles tennis player of the week: Yusif Rustom, Milford – Rustom was the top seed in his sectional and took first in the tournament after five victories.

Ohio boys doubles tennis team of the week: Christian Sprinkle/Nik Shah, Cincinnati Country Day – As CCD doubles took the top two spots in the Mason Division II sectional, it was Springle and Shah who won the finals 6-1, 6-2.

Northern Kentucky boys singles tennis player of the week: Kyle Moellering, St. Henry – He defeated his opponent from Boone County 6-0, 6-0.

Northern Kentucky girls singles tennis player of the week: Lexi O’Daniel, Holy Cross – She defeated her opponent from Ryle in a tiebreaker, winning 6-4, 7-6, 10-8.

Ohio boys track and field athlete of the week: Nico Arraje, Wyoming – He won the 1,600 meters at the Cincinnati Hills League meet with a time of 4 minutes, 29.18 seconds.

Ohio girls track and field athlete of the week: Caitlin Evans, Milford – She broke her own long jump school record with a leap of 17 feet, 6 inches at the Eastern Cincinnati Conference league meet.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys track and field athlete of the week: Hunter Wiseman, Campbell County – He won the discus at Villa Madonna with a throw of 143 feet, 3 inches and the shot put with an attempt of 44 feet, 3 inches.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls track and field athlete of the week: Karina Stankova, Covington Latin – She broke the 100-meter school record for the second weekend in a row, running 13.95 seconds at Villa Madonna.

Boys volleyball player of the week: Gavin Gerhard, McNicholas – The sophomore had 16 kills to lead McNicholas over Taylor and into the regional semifinals.
