Antimicrobial Resistance in the Context of One Health

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) continues to threaten previously effective treatments within healthcare. UTMB One Health Student Collaborator Presents His Research at Johns Hopkins World GIS Day!

UTMB One Health newsletter editor and student collaborator, Austin Weynand, MHS, presented a poster from his Masters thesis work at Johns Hopkins World GIS Day in November. The work presented focused on an integrated community case-management program (iCCM) implemented in a region of Zambia with consistently high and year-round transmission of malaria. The impact evaluation assessed changes in the clinical and epidemiologic profiles of children with severe malaria before, during and after iCCM implementation. Researchers also examined shifts in crude and adjusted mortality among patients and patterns of healthcare utilization and access over time, contrasted with patterns of background parasite prevalence and weather. Austin and colleagues are currently writing a manuscript reporting the findings, representing the culmination of 5 years of antimalarial efforts in northern Zambia. Congratulations, Austin!
