SNAKES
Just like many wooded areas in this part of Missouri, Timber
Rattlesnakes and Copperhead snakes live in Young C.A. Some are
actually tracked through embedded transmitters by
Dr. Wayne J. Drda. I met Wayne on the trail while scouting out
a location for this cache. We had a long talk about snake behavior
and how his tracking system works. If you see a man with a metal
box and holding what looks like a TV antenna, that is probably
Wayne. If it looks like he is tracking, let him do his work without
disruption. It takes a lot of time and data to determine how the
snake population is changing. He said the area where the cache is,
next to the big pond, is clear. Here is a link to a 2005
St. Louis Post Dispatch story that mentions the work Wayne is
doing.
CACHING IN MISSOURI CONSERVATION AREAS
As of the beginning of 2008, the Missouri Dept. of Conservation is
still in the process of approving a geocaching policy that will be
effective for a public-use land that it manages. It is expected to
mirror the policy of the Missouri Dept. of Natural Resources (State
Parks), however it will be more restictive in areas where nature
preservation supercedes the desire for the public to use it for
recreation.
