REC "Kids" Make Us Proud!

They aren't really "kids" anymore, but even as adults they'll always be part of the REC family!

Meet Valeria Herrera and Mario Bravo.  Both Valeria and Mario participated in REC programming through their Elementary, Middle, and High School years.  It's hard to believe how quickly they've grown!

Currently they are both full time, first-generation college students at CMU. Each of them recently received CMU President Recognition Awards - Valeria for the month of February and Mario for March.
Valeria's major is in Outdoor Recreation Industries Studies.  She also just received recognition for Overall Outstanding Student Contribution in the 2021 Wright Collegiate Challenge.  Her team worked with EUREKA! McConnell Science Museum to improve access to the Riverfront Trail for kids in the Clifton area.

This honor and the CMU award both recognize Valeria's desire to help others.  Not only is she always willing to offer a helping hand, but she recognizes the value of advocacy where she sees a need.  We love her sense of community spririt!

Mario Bravo is majoring in Computer Science.  He has started a new club at CMU, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. This new chapter is going to help students in the STEM field gain access to internships, resources, and networking opportunities with Fortune 500 employers.

Mario credits REC for offering him opportunities and experiences he thought he'd never have.  The support Mario has received through REC has translated to a passion to give back and help others reach their potential and succeed.

Mario and Valeria are just two of many students who have come through REC on their way to adulthood.  They all have had obstacles to overcome along the way and nothing makes us more proud than to see them succeed!

We couldn't support these kids without your support, though.  Thank you for being part of the REC community!
Thank you Grand Junction Horizon Sunrise Rotary for Driving Kids to Success!
REC's small 14-passenger buses have become an important component of programming at Riverside Educational Center and sponsors, like GJ Horizon Sunrise Rotary, lighten the burden of maintaining those buses, helping REC drive our kids to success.

REC buses allow us to provide a safe, after-program ride home for many of our students whose parents are not able to pick them up.  Just that use alone relieves a lot of stress for the family and allows their child to participate regularly in REC's quality after-school programming.  These kids may not normally have access to REC programming without the transportation we provide.

REC also uses the buses to transport students to a variety of enrichment activities.  Simple things like a visit to EUREKA! McConnell Science Museum, a nature hike in the Colorado National Monument, learning to ride a bike on the river trail, cross-country skiing for the first time on the Grand Mesa, or facing the challenge of rock climbing at the climbing gym are all experiences that help REC kids grow towards personal success.

But we can't bring them to those experiences or get them home from tutoring without working buses.

How can you help?  You can be a part of our mission to impact kids who need it most AND gain exposure for your business by sponsoring a REC bus!

REC buses travel almost 3500 miles per year during busy times along high-visibility routes.  Your logo will be seen by a broad audience throughout the Grand Valley while you support a critical need for REC programming.  Sponsorhips requires an annual donation and dollar amount varies according to where you prefer to have your logo placed on the bus.

Thank you Grand Junction Horizon Sunrise Rotary club for sponsoring REC bus number 4 for another year!
Bringing Community Connectedness to CliftonYouth

Community connectedness, or a person's feeling of connection with their surrounding community, plays a large part in developing and maintaining positive health and well-being behaviors.  This is especially true with young people.
REC's Mount Garfield Middle School (MGMS) kids have recently formed a youth coalition, the Gator Youth Group.  While the youth coalition's long term purpose is to give input into the "Safe Spaces for Youth" aspect of Mesa County Public Health's Community Transformation Group, their goals right now are to create community connectedness amongst their peers at MGMS.

The group has started out simply by learning what it means to cooperate, work, and have fun together.  They've also come up with some great ideas for projects the school community can partiipate in to address bullying and mental health issues in the student population.

Social and emotional health are foundational to a young person's successful transition into adulthood.  REC appreciates our partnership with Mesa County Public Health in creating opportunities like this for our students to grow!
New Options Available for Donating to REC

REC is incredibly fortunate to have such a high-level of community support and donor involvement. Thank you!

We are pleased to announce two additional options for donors.

First, REC can now accept gifts of appreciated stock. A gift of appreciated stock made directly to REC can have significant tax benefits for donors, as it allows the donor to avoid paying the capital gains tax on the sale of the stock.

REC has created a brokerage account through Timberline Bank and WealthSource Partners for the purpose of accepting gifts of appreciated stock. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Kristen Lummis (kristen@rec4kids.com). She can connect you to our brokerage account representative.

Additionally, REC can also accept IRA Charitable Rollovers, also known as Qualified Charitable Distributions. These donations also have a tax benefit for donors age 70 ½ or older. IRA rules allow donors to make a contribution directly from an IRA account to REC without paying taxes on the distribution.

If you are interested in making a gift of appreciated stock or an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution, please contact your financial advisor to ensure that this is a good option for you.

Thank You to Our Donors
