Census 1841 lookup please
« on: Friday 01 June 07 18:09 BST (UK) »
Hi,

looking for Stephen Hobbs (b. Portsea about 1800) and his wife Elizabeth (b. Portsea about 1800).
They would have had at least 4 children in 1841:
Willaim henry (0), Sarah JAne (2), Alfred (5), Emma (9)
They lived in Tonbridge Kent in 1851, but maybe still in Hampshire in 1841?

They were married before 1837. But when?

Kind regards

Stephen could have been at sea in the 1841 census.

Hi,

Stephen's son Alfred was a sailmaker census 1851, 1861, not sure about 1871.
Could it be that the age of 75 was wrongly transcribed? Or could this Stephen be father-in-law?
And maybe Sarah was his first wife?
Children Emma and Alfred look promissing although Emma should be about 9 in 1841.
More questions then answers....

With no relationships given on the 1841 census this is going to be tricky to sort out.

I think as Elizabeth and Sarah were living in the same street it is possible they are related.  Perhaps they swapped children. ???

Hi,

So maybe this Stephen (married to Charity) is the 75 year-old in 1841.
Sarah could be his daughter in-law. His son is not living there at that moment (maybe dead?).
Elisabeth could be married to Stephen jr. (b. 1800). So Sarah and Elizabeth could be sisters in-law.
As to swapping kids... I would like to swap mine sometimes (but just for an hour or so..).

My God! A lot of ifs, maybe's, could be's etc. Keeps getting more and more difficult.

So more questions:
When did Charity die?
To whom was Sarah married.
Who were the parents (esp. father) of Elizabeth (1825), Charles (1829).
