Announcing the opening of our first eco-friendly Crayfish hotel in Lüderitz! 🦞🦞
Our dedicated and creative team in Namibia has successfully designed and deployed a 2.5-ton eco anchor into the water. By using fly ash cement, we’ve managed to cut our carbon footprint by 50%. This innovative design provides a habitat area 290 times larger than our previous models, safeguarding our local Buchter Crayfish from predatory seals.
🦞 Jasus lalandii, commonly known as the west coast rock lobster, is the foundation of the seasonal Lüderitz lobster fishery. Lüderitz permits fishing of this species between November and the end of April, with restrictions in place the rest of the year to allow stock recovery. This species naturally occurs within the kelp forests along the shoreline but is absent in the areas of our Giant Kelp farm due to a lack of shelter from predators.
Today, we welcomed our first guests checking in to their new homes 😁 Over time, these structures will become home to many other organisms.
💡 Did you know? Crayfish play a crucial role in the local ecosystem and economy. They are known for their resilience and unique adaptation to the harsh marine environment.
At Kelp Blue, our commitment to sustainability is guided by our 4 Return principles, one of them the Return on Natural Capital.

🏆 From 100 to 20! We're one step closer! We've just been named as one of the top 20 finalists for the XPRIZE Carbon Removal grand Prize out of 1,300 vetted submissions 🏆
🌊Incredibly excited to share that Kelp Blue is named for the prestigious XPRIZE Carbon Removal Prize, funded by Elon Musk and the MUSK FOUNDATION, aimed at tackling the biggest threat facing humanity—fighting climate change and rebalancing Earth’s carbon cycle.
🌿 Our project achieves a number of things: locking away carbon, restoring and enriching marine biodiversity, and bringing meaningful diverse employment opportunities to fragile coastal economies—thereby reducing extractive pressures on marine resources.
A few words from our CEO and founder, Daniel Hooft: “These nature-positive and social impacts are a side-effect of an elegant, harmonious commercial activity—so do not require a single cent in additional investment. Our cost per ton of sequestering carbon is zero.
As we move into the final stage of this prestigious competition, we are confident that we will be able to showcase Kelp Blue as a viable, proven, and sustainable solution to combating climate change while contributing to local economies and livelihoods.”
🌟 We could not be more thrilled and honoured to be recognised for our commitment to and impact we are having on combating climate change by sequestering Carbon. We are humbled to be standing alongside remarkable finalists in the top 20 companies, offering carbon removal solutions around the world.

At Kelp Blue Biotech, we love getting our boots stuck in the mud. 👨🌾
We do this by working directly with #farmers to co-develop and test our range of seaweed bisotimulants and agricultural product offerings. Our products:
🌱 Increase crop yield
🌱 Restore the health of the soil
🌱 Make crops stronger from the inside so they are able to withstand climate stressors like drought and heat.
Co-creation and co-learning is a cornerstone of developing improved product that help the #transition to healthier farming practices that respect soil health and respect the planet. This is why we launched our Ambassador Farm Program— dedicated to mutual learnings and #research.
💡 Today, our program counts 20 farmers from all around the world: from the USA to Chile and Argentina, from Namibia, to Poland and France with crops ranging from grapes to coffee to pasture land to almonds.
Send us a message if you’d like to know more about the program, or if you want to join it yourself. Benefits:
📣 Be the first to see crop improvements as a result of our new products
📣 Co-create products especially for your crop and soil type
📣 Get first hand learnings from similar farms

The role will be instrumental in driving the continual development of how we manage our monitoring specific activities and assests. Come join us on our mission to re-wild the ocean by cultivating giant kelp.

At Kelp Blue, our guiding principle is the 4-Returns framework, which informs our operations and decision-making process.
One of those four returns, is the Natural Return. We prioritize the restoration of biodiversity in all our activities, leaving the planet behind a little better than we found it.
These photos were taken by our colleague Iriya Jona next to our Giant Kelp farm in Shearwater Bay, close to Lüderitz (Namibia). As some of our team members were on their way to our farms by boat, they were welcomed by a spectacular dolphin show.
Moments like these reinforce the commitment to our mission! Re-wilding the oceans.
