Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, March 1

In a vote that ended March 1, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Feb. 25.

The Enquirer has mailed certificates for winter winners through Feb. 9 to athletic departments. The next round will go out in mid-April.

The Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners.

Ohio boys basketball team: Little Miami – A 55-54 overtime victory on Feb. 22 sent No. 11 Little Miami to the postseason second round over No. 4 Goshen.

Ohio girls basketball team: Norwood – Norwood clinched its sectional by edging No. 4 Williamsburg 43-37 on Feb. 20.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball team: Holy Cross – Holy Cross ended a five-game losing streak by beating Newport Central Catholic and St. Henry to conclude the regular season.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball team: Holy Cross – Holy Cross reached the 25-win mark by beating Lexington Catholic 65-37 and Conner 43-31.

Boys winter team: Moeller wrestling – Moeller topped runner-up Harrison 244-225 to win the sectional title at Loveland on Feb. 24.

Girls winter team: Wilmington bowling – The Hurricane rolled a 3,535 at Rollhouse to take home the sectional crown on Feb. 22.

Ohio big-school boys basketball: Raleigh Burgess, Sycamore – He had 27 points and 14 rebounds in a sectional win over Mason.

Ohio small-school boys basketball: Brody Fisher, Williamsburg – He had 13 points and 16 rebounds in a sectional win over North College Hill.

Ohio big-school girls basketball: Macee Steele, Goshen – She had 11 points, five rebounds and two steals, and made a buzzer-beating three-pointer to help the Warriors defeat Lebanon in overtime.

Ohio small-school girls basketball: Ali Winchester, Norwood – Her double-double of 23 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals led the Indians past Williamsburg.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball: Jack Sullivan, Beechwood – He had 20 points as the Tigers had a close five-point loss to defending Ninth Region champion Newport, then 23 points and seven rebounds to help the Tigers rally from a 13-point deficit to beat Highlands, 73-66. Sullivan is the leading scorer and rebounder for Beechwood.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball: Zoee Meyers, Bishop Brossart – She scored 22 points in a win over Lloyd Memorial, then had 17 points in a win over Walton-Verona.

Ohio big-school boys bowler: Charlie Huhn, Batavia – Along with fellow seniors Nick Burke and Garret Dunn, they bowled one of their highest series of the year in the sectional tournament to help Batavia finish fifth in the team standings to qualify for districts. Huhn led the way with 618 (224-170-224) to finish ninth individually. Burke was 12th (607) and Dunn (13th) and Carter Lynch 32nd (544).

Ohio small-school boys bowler: Hayden Shelly, McNicholas – He shot a 568 (209-178-181) in the Division II district tournament.

Ohio big-school girls bowler: Morgan Lubbers, Anderson – The senior finished 13th in the Crossgate sectional to lead the team to seventh in the team standings and a berth in the district tournament.

Ohio small-school girls bowler: Brooklyn Porter, Cincinnati Christian – She shot 477 (163-155-159) to finish 35th in the Division II district tournament.

Gymnast: Abigail Dittmann, Turpin– The senior completed a perfect four-year state qualifying streak with her performance at the Southwest District Championship. Dittmann qualified as an all-around competitor with a score of 35.025 thanks to her first-place winning beam routine and a third-place finish in the floor competition.

Ohio boys swimmer/diver: Thackston McMullan, St. Xavier – He won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle state championships, opened the winning 200-yard freestyle relay and anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Ohio girls swimmer/diver: Reese Reilly, Roger Bacon – She became the Spartans’ first female state champion since 1985 when she won the Division II 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.76.

Northern Kentucky boys swimmer/diver: Landon Isler, Ryle – He won the 2024 Kentucky state diving championship.

Northern Kentucky girls swimmer/diver: Sadie Hartig, Notre Dame – She won the 500-yard freestyle state championship in 4:56.46, a time that gives her All-American consideration. The junior also finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle and anchored the third-place 400-yard freestyle relay.

Ohio DI boys wrestler: Joe Schnurstein, Anderson – The sophomore had two pins and a 6-4 sudden victory at the Middletown sectional, winning the 106-pound bracket.

Ohio DII boys wrestler: T.J. Pastura, Batavia – The freshman is a sectional champion after going 3-0 at the Western Brown sectional.

Ohio DIII boys wrestler: Josh Vilardo, Bethel-Tate – Vilardo won the 165-pound sectional at Blanchester after going 4-0 with four pins.

Ohio girls wrestler: Janelle Donahue, Clermont Northeastern – Donahue was the 135-pound winner at the Western Brown pre-regional.

Northern Kentucky boys archer: Jacob Klette, Ryle – The senior finished fourth out of 520 archers at the Border Wars Invitational featuring the best high school archers from five states. Klette finished with a score of 290 with 20 tens.
