Vantage Towers to generate green energy using MOWEA´s micro wind turbines

  • In the first phase of the project over 750 wind turbines will be installed on 52 Vantage Towers towers in Germany
  • Under average wind conditions, the green energy generated on-site will cover 100% of the towers' energy requirements
  • The extended pilot project is associated with a power generation capacity of up to 650 MWh and an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 239 tonnes compared to the German power mix
  • Vantage Towers continues to drive innovative green energy generation solutions with the collaboration - one of the cornerstones of the company's ESG strategy

Düsseldorf, 19 January 2022 - Vantage Towers AG, a leading tower company in Europe, has agreed on a strategic partnership with Berlin-based wind energy startup MOWEA. The two companies will join forces towards generating green energy by installing around 752 micro wind turbines on 52 of Vantage Towers' towers in Germany.

The pilot project is associated with a power generation capacity of up to 650 MWh per annum. Under average wind conditions, the turbines are capable of reducing grid power consumption and electrical running costs at each of the Vantage Towers sites by up to two-thirds and more. That corresponds to an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 239 tonnes compared to the German power mix1. The wind energy generated by the turbines is not fed into the grid. Instead, it is used directly at the sites to power the active equipment of Vodafone, Vantage Towers' largest customer. Installation of the MOWEA micro wind turbines is scheduled for the second half of the year, provided that all necessary permits have been issued by then.

MOWEA's wind energy systems have a modular and flexible design that can be adapted to tower energy requirements. MOWEA uses standardised wind turbines with communication interfaces for smart remote maintenance and control, an algorithm to maximise performance, integrated brakes for higher levels of safety, and seamless connectivity to standard battery and energy management systems. Since the initial installation in December 2019, MOWEA's technology has been optimised by Vantage Towers and the htw saar University of Applied Sciences ('Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft des Saarlandes') to overcome a number of technical challenges associated with the integration of wind energy systems and towers.

Vivek Badrinath, CEO of Vantage Towers AG: "We are very excited about the strategic partnership with MOWEA because it enables us to generate cost-efficient and maintenance-friendly renewable energy at selected sites with their wind turbines. It also represents an important step forward towards a greener future and the sustainable digital transformation of Europe. We have more than 82,000 towers in Europe. So, if the pilot project is a success, there is clear potential for the future expansion of the partnership."

Dr Till Naumann, CEO of MOWEA-Windenergieanlagen GmbH: "We aim to deliver flexible wind energy solutions to industrial users and to help our partners achieve their environmental goals in the process. The collaboration between Vantage Towers and MOWEA is a fantastic example of a successful partnership between established market players and startups in the battle to prevent climate change. By installing our micro wind turbines at Vantage Towers sites, we are making the on-sitegeneration of green power for the establishment and operation of networks possible - with the potential for a Europe-wide scale-upin the near future."

MOWEA mini turbines are associated with crucial advantages in the context of the energy transformation because their modular design makes it possible to install them in places where conventional wind turbines are not an option. In this context, Vantage Towers also relies on the support of the building authorities for the approval of the turbines. The wind turbines also operate independently of conventional energy sources, which makes them suitable for remote locations. Unlike solar panels, the wind turbines generate power at night, so they can be used in conjunction with photovoltaic systems.

Vantage Towers' partnership with MOWEA is enabling Vodafone to achieve its objectives of a 50 percent reduction in emissions by 2025 and climate neutrality by 2040. Vantage Towers` first major 'green' milestone

  • the Vantage Towers infrastructure being powered entirely from renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar and hydro power - was reached last summer. Vantage Towers has already installed solar panels at around 90 sites and, if the test phase is successful, further solar panels will be installed at other sites. [End]
