Hungary ready to give financial assistance to Ukraine on bilateral basis - Orban

MOSCOW. Dec 7 (Interfax) - Hungary has not vetoed the EU's macro-financial assistance to Ukraine and will be ready to provide financial assistance to Kiev on the bilateral basis, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said.

"Today's news are devoted to Hungary's veto on financial assistance to Ukraine. This is fake news. Hungary is ready to give financial assistance to Ukraine on the bilateral basis. There is no veto, there is no blackmail," the Ukrainian media quoted Orban as saying on a social network.

Yet "we want to convince EU member states that a common debt of the European Union is not a solution," Orban said, as quoted by the media.

"We have another vision for the European future, the one based on strong member states rather than a huge common debt," he said.

As reported earlier, Hungarian Finance Minister Mihaly Varga opposed the EU legislative amendments, which would allow the allotment of 18 billion euros to Ukraine as macro-financial assistance in 2023.

The EU said it would keep looking for a solution to be backed by all member states.

Varga said during an open meeting of the European Economic and Financial Affairs Council in Brussels on Tuesday that Hungary was against the amendment to financial laws.

In particular, Hungary opposed an amendment to the long-standing financial legislation, which must be adopted unanimously.
