Kaycee B is making the most of her lucky break

As Kaycee B puts it, she’s a lucky duck.

“I can’t say that enough,” she says. “The ducks are lucky. I’m lucky with them.”

The Billings, Montana native has had binders full of song lyrics she’s written since she was a teenager, but she never had a plan to do anything with them. Then came her lucky break – “my first big show” – about six months ago, and since then her unique twist of soul, R&B and pop music has been garnering attention far and wide.

She’s since released her debut EP, I Am Me, and her songs have earned hundreds of thousands of plays in recent weeks.

“I saw people around me doing music and it’s like when you have something inside you and you have this idea you want to let it out so bad and tell everybody,” she says. “I started to think one day that if I don’t act on this I’m going to be full of regret for not doing something that was natural for me. It was just like why not?”

That big break came when rapper Lil Wayne performed a show in Billings in May. Kaycee B, eager to get her name back out there as an artist, contacted the promoters and offered to sponsor the event in search of a marketing boost.

She sent them some songs of her own, as well, and expressed an interest in opening for some concerts in the future. A few weeks later, she got a phone call: she could do the show.

“When they called me back I was like yes!, but I was also like dang, I wasn’t prepared for this,” she says. “I had no idea this was going to happen. It was very magical, very fun and it was really nice because I was on stage in my own home town. It was a really large concert for Billings and I knew a lot of people. There was a lot of local support, I even recognized people at the front of the audience.”

Kaycee B has since opened for artists such as 2 Chainz, Ashanti, Ja Rule, Too Short and others. She’s got projects in the works with artists like Starlito, Allan Cubas, Dontae Wilmore, J Reezy and more. In the midst of the newfound recognition, she’s trying to take things day by day.

“Even eight months ago I had no idea I would be doing anything like that,” she says. “I was trying to come back out and be relevant and let people know I was making music again. I got involved with good people who were willing to give me a shot.”

She released the nine-track EP on Sept. 29, and has also put out a handful of singles and freestyles in 2023, including “Falling In Love” which she released a few months before the Lil Wayne show.

Her two favorite tracks from the EP are “I Am Me” and “It’s OK,” which both came to her especially quickly; she was struck by inspiration for the latter while standing in her kitchen. “Last Moment On Earth (L.M.O.E.)” was a product of a collaboration with a visiting producer who connected randomly with Kaycee while visiting Billings.

“It’s hard for me to stick to a style because of the fact I enjoy so many different types of music,” she says. “I definitely really like R&B, soul and pop music but I did grow up with a little more alternative music around me. There was definitely a slight influence on two songs from Alesana, a very melodic and beautiful metal band. And I always like the classic soul sound.

“I like the songs where you can really bellow and just go off,” she says. “I do like being upbeat so I have some upbeat songs because people like to party and I like to party so I want to bring that energy to the table. But I always like the old school.”

The 27-year-old Kaycee has been involved in performing arts since she was eight, first with her church and then with her school. She could often be found as a teenager singing in bars around Billings when she got the chance. Now she’s a mother and says there’s a “superstar in my house and it’s not even me.”
