OBITUARY

MR W. CLEMENT CARGILL. WELL-KNOWN NEWSPAPER MAN. Following a brief illness the death occurred in an Auckland Private Hos* pital on Friday last of Mr William Clement Cargill, aged 63 years, deceased being a well-known resident of Morrinsville, and managing director of the Cargill Publishing Company. The late Mr Cargill, who was a son of the Rev. C. Cargill, was born in Kent, England, and in 1596 married Isabella, daughter of Mr J. Nicol. He was educated at Newport and Dulwich, England, and Heidelberg, Germany. From 1892-1902 deceased was proprietor of the Wqirarapa Star, and with Mr A. C. Major, changed the paper to the Wairanipa Age. He was proprietor of the Patca Press from 1904-08, and in 1911, with Mr R. J. Enmcs, started the Pukekoho Times. In 1915 he purchased the Morrinsville Star and at the time of his demise was managing director of the Cargill Publishing Company, which publishes the Morrinsville Star, the Matamata Record and the Putar.uru Press. Deceased was a member of the Wanganui Education Board, 1906-OS, the Taranaki Education Board, 190910. and president of the New Zealand Master Printers’ Federation, 1928-30. In • Morrinsville affairs Mr Cargill was recognised as a man of more than usual organising ability and bis advice was sought on many matters of district interest.

He was also interested in all branches of sport and coached Rugby football, lawn tennis and badminton with much success. He was president of the Morrinsville Tennis and Badminton Clubs for a number of years. At one time he represented Wairarapa at cricket.

Mr Cargill was a member Of many local societies in Morrinsville and was president of the Horticultural Society for some years, until 1931. For many years he was chairman of the Beautifying Society, which co-operated with the Borough Council in laying out parks and streets in Morrinsville. When a queen carnival was hold a year ago at Morrinsville to provide a children’s playground and a Plunket room in tho town Mr Cargill, was chairman of the committee which raised £6OO for the purpose. Mr Cargill is survived by his wife and three daughters, Mrs N. J. Howie, of Iviwitahi, and the Misses A. and D Cargill, of Morrinsville.
