Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Sept. 15

In a vote that ended Sept. 15, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Sept. 10.

Fall winners will receive certificates through the athletic departments about midway through the season. The remaining certificates will be mailed at the end of the season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners for the 2023-2024 high school sports season.

Ohio football team: Williamsburg – Williamsburg defeated Hillsboro 57-27 and has a 4-0 start to the season.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team: Holy Cross – Holy Cross went 2-9 last season but is already 3-1 this season after topping Middletown Christian 41-7.

Boys fall team: Clinton-Massie soccer – The Falcons are 7-1 overall after shutting out Goshen 2-0 and haven’t lost since their first match of the season.

Girls fall team: McNicholas volleyball – The Rockets went 3-0 over the week, including a pair of conference victories over Carroll and Alter.

Ohio boys cross country: Nathan Palmer, Middletown – He ran a new personal best of 18:08.20 at Mason.

Ohio girls cross country: Mary McIntosh, Mariemont – The freshman ran 21:29.30 for 16th place in the Mason Division II race.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross-country: Ethan Martin, Villa Madonna – He finished seventh at Mason County in 17:00.20, just ahead of teammate Mark Antrobus.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross-country: Ellie Frey, Conner – The sophomore took 10th place at Mason County with a time of 21:12.30.

Ohio big-school football: Kinxton Hill, Northwest – He rushed for 371 yards on 30 carries with three touchdowns in the Knights’ 35-28 loss to Carroll.

Ohio small-school football: Isaiah Smith, Western Brown – He had 12 catches for 240 yards and two touchdowns in the team’s 56-48 loss to Jackson.

Northern Kentucky football: Enrique Soard, Dayton – He led the Greendevils with 11 tackles and recovered a fumble in a 22-6 win over Ludlow.

Field hockey: Paige Wahl, Walnut Hills – The freshman goalie stepped up her game during a doubleheader against Kettering and Oakwood. Wahl combined for 30 saves in two games and displayed her ability to step up and lead the defense.

Boys golf: Finley Bartlett, Wyoming – Bartlett had a four-under-par 68 to finish first overall at the Hadley Invitational.

Girls golf: Sydney Dodds, Anderson – Dodds was the medalist with a 36 for Anderson in a 159-221 win over West Clermont.

Ohio big-school boys soccer: Will Bertoli, Loveland – He posted three shutout wins in goal last week in wins over Fairfield, Sycamore and West Clermont.

Ohio small-school boys soccer: A.J. Brockhaus, Ross – He had three goals in an 8-0 win over Franklin.

Ohio big-school girls soccer: Makayla Raynor, West Clermont - She recorded one goal last week and has already exceeded her point total from last year through seven games.

Ohio small-school girls soccer: Ava Folk, McNicholas – The defensive midfielder helped the Rockets post big wins over Campbell County and Indian Hill to improve to 6-2.

Northern Kentucky boys soccer: Noah Rittinger, Campbell County – He had two goals apiece in wins over Boone County and Beechwood.

Northern Kentucky girls soccer: Rylie Kidman, Beechwood – She had two goals and an assist in a big 4-0 win by the Tigers over Holy Cross in 35th District play.

Girls singles tennis player: Jasmin Mu, Milford - She led the Eagles to three wins last week in a big way, losing just three games in a trio of straight-set victories. She opened the week with a 6-1, 6-1 win before posting a 6-0, 6-0 win, then wrapping up her week with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Girls doubles tennis team: Rachel Hankins/Brooke Sanders, Lakota West – The seniors posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Cincinnati Country Day at first doubles, a key win in the Firebirds’ 3-2 match win.

Ohio big-school volleyball: Leanna Lawson, Fairfield – She had 13 kills, nine digs, six assists and five aces as the Indians beat Hamilton.

Ohio small-school volleyball: Savanna Stacey, McNicholas – In three wins, the freshman outside hitter had 52 kills, 33 digs, 16 aces and four blocks while hitting at a rate of 37%.

Northern Kentucky volleyball: Haylee Reynolds, Dayton – She had 12 assists, four digs, and three aces in a win over Williamstown, and 16 digs and nine assists in a win over Henry County.

Boys water polo: Cole Dowden, Sycamore – The junior had 47 saves in five games over the weekend, helping the Aviators to a 3-2 record. Dowden also scored a full-court goal against Napoleon and ended the Ohio Cup with five assists and 11 steals

Girls water polo: Madeline House, Milford – House scored five goals for the Milford Eagles on Wednesday against Mason. House’s five goals put her second on the team in scoring, behind only senior Lindsay Brown with six.
