So is the Valkyrie considered mission killed (for game purposes) or just disabled/crippled this round unless it takes more fire? Not sure how the rules work here if it's considered blown up or not or just badly mauled and hsut down for a turn if it doesn't take more hits.

Shut down only lasts for about a turn without outside interference keeping it shut down, so unless it basically keeps tasering the valk, the valk should get back up next round.

If anybody's curious as to why the Valkyrie shut down:

- - rolls (9 - 1 BattleMech = 8): Valkyrie shuts down!

It's a temporary effect caused by the TSEMP.

That said, being shut down for a turn means it can't move or generate a TMM. Meaning there is a decent chance it could be destroyed this upcoming next turn if the Ares and surviving tank both decide to focus their fire.

Which they should. It is just too good a target to pass up.

Which is a good reason to just go all out. Either the other mechs draw fire away from the shut down valkyrie, or they get a turn of relatively free shots at the Hades.

New Earth 1-9 Raid (Wolf Empire)

It was a lucky hit, but “Ironsides” Ishikawa wasn’t about to argue when her Black Knight’s clantech ER PPC struck the Ares’ transplex canopy and burned straight through into the superheavy monster’s crew cabin. Normally piloted by two warriors, the Ares was fairly proof against warrior injuries—but nothing balked the ravenous power of a Clan PPC. The Ares changed at once from vital and active to nearly bonelessly inert.

It didn’t topple over the way a bipod would have, but the telltale slumping of the arms and shoulders was all anyone needed to see to know whoever had been commanding it had met a grisly end. Switching targets at once, the rest of the company poured fire into the remaining enemy vehicle blowing it apart. They might not be able to stop the Spider, but that hardly mattered. The Wolves’ message had been sent, with extra punctuation. The Republicans would fall in line, or the next attack would be an invasion.

After-Action Report: And with that lucky crit from the Black Knight, that’s it for this mission. Clan Wolf will be pleased how well their message was shared with the Republic. I have no intention of making the players try to hunt down the Spider, it can get off the board in two turns and the odds of it taking any appreciable damage are practically nill. Spiders are monsters, it’s why the victory condition doesn’t require killing it.

Per Clan Wolf’s contract, 1/2 of the battlefield salvage is theirs. They claim the three salvage from the Ares and the players (randomly determined) lose the Dasher II from their salvage catalogue. The unit gains (4 battlefield + 2 field = 6) salvage.

Field Salvage has a 50% chance to convert into a random ‘Mech for the salvage catalogue: rolled 6 (success), rolled 6 (success)!
- Random ‘Mech #1: rolled 2 (Inner Sphere), Rolled 4 (Assault), MAL-XT Malice added to salvage catalogue!

Sudhir Muratovic generates 1 barter collecting insurance for 1 injured warrior
Upkeep (25 - 7 = 18 barter remaining)

“Excellent work, mercenary,” the Wolf Empire functionary looked more like a diplomat than the warrior he must have been. Shahrazad would’ve expected the word ‘mercenary’ to get caught in his rakish pencil moustache, but Lionel Ward spoke calmly and without even the slightest hint of disdain. “Your reward has been purchased and secured by our local proxies, and will be delivered to you directly. With,” Ward smarmed, “a fifty percent increase for successfully bringing down the Ares. The local battalion will be hard pressed to resist the Wolf Empire’s demands without their strongest unit.”

Raniya and Shahrazad kept silent, there really wasn’t anything for either of them to respond to. Neither would turn down bonus pay; but even before the blackout HPG communication wasn’t truly instantaneous. Arriving, as it had, via a courier JumpShip; Ward’s holo-recording was surprisingly brief.

“We have also requested the merchants of Clan Sea Fox pay you a visit sometime in the near future. They will undoubtedly find trade opportunities wherever you wind up,” Ward’s smile turned slightly capricious, “as I imagine the local… ah, conditions may not be conductive to you operating so close to the Wolf Empire’s territory for much longer.”

“Smug tinspawn,” Raniya grumbled as the recording ended. “Message received. They set us up.”

Shahrizad regarded her XO quietly, “How so?”

“The Wolf Clan isn’t particularly fond of having an unaffiliated mercenary company operating so close to their borders. They would prefer we move along to greener pastures. Whatever ‘message’ they’re sending to other Republic holdouts? We sent ‘ours’ first.” Raniya scowled. “The locals might not realize this was just a ‘one and done’ job.”

Random Event(s)
“We won’t stand for this, Hayard-Gunnes. You’ve launched a blatant attack on my battalion and killed a Knight of the Sphere,” the Republic commander’s transmission was continuous, not giving Shahrizad space for a reply. The fact that they were speaking at all rather than launching an immediate counterattack was probably remarkable in and of itself. It spoke of the local commander’s nervousness. A Battalion should be able to walk all over a stray ‘Mech company, but they’d take even more damage in the process and their neighbors were attentive and very hungry.

“You have one week to vacate New Earth. A failure to comply will be taken as an admission of guilt and there will be a reprisal. Major Csonka out.”

Shahrizad rubbed her eyes, and dragged the palm of her hand down her face. After a few moments, she turned to the technician manning the comm station. “Prepare to transmit a reply, on the Republic frequency band…”

- Company R&R to take a second downtime immediately.
- Lay Low to avoid attention, staving off reprisals from the local authority

Selling Salvage or ‘Mechs
-

PTN’s Things To Consider You’ve got a fair amount of salvage, and the Wolfhound isn’t a vital unit. You probably don’t want to burn a salvage repairing it, you can swap it out for the Razorback or something else if you salvage or buy a ‘Mech. At the same time, tempting as the Malice is, you don’t have anyone capable of piloting an assault ‘Mech very well so it might be worth waiting to build it until you’ve got someone who can pilot it without penalty. The Preta Invictus is reasonably durable but fairly low damage, if you salvage it you’ll probably want to burn an extra salvage to unlock either the Dominus or Comminus configurations.

The Uraeus or Kheper would be a good buy, since their Bad Reputation (Word of Blake Lookalike) makes them extremely cheap to pick up. That means they’re probably not ‘Mechs you’ll want to sell, but the Kheper is basically a slightly slower, better-armed Preta and the Uraeus is both durable and dangerous if not very flexible.

You could also burn a salvage to unlock one of the Omni variants of the Stormwolf. The Stormwolf D is the only real upgrade, trading some long range firepower for short range damage and an Overheat value. Alternatively, several of your ‘Mechs could be upgraded although I’m not sure I’d label any of the possibilities as high priority

No opinions on any particular option, except to tell the locals "Smell ya later nerds" and leave

That said, I really do hope that we have continue to have at least a semi-crunchy format; one of the larger disappointments when reading Yooper's Strike Commander was that the thread voted to streamline the out-of-mission gameplay, after it turned out that bomb trucks did not do what they wanted. Doesn't know the impossible.

While I definitely overheated by 1 to try and get an early critical hit off, I legit forgot "head asplode" was one of the possible options. Can't complain about the results though! A satisfying mission all around: took down an assault, got out with only minimal damage, and with a bunch of loot to match. Very happy with the team's performance, looking forward to working with you all again when our names rollback around in a decade or so. I had a lot of fun as a first-time player, thanks again for running this PTN!

As for down-time, still looking it through, but I'd lean towards the buying the Kheper and building the Preta Comminus - we're still limited on pilots who can handle size 3 mechs, so getting some high damage size 2s seems like the best bet (given that we regretfully do not have the salvage to buy dear sweet Raniya a quadruped to ride around in).

PTN: Do we lose the Malice from our repair catalogue if we give up the salvage to the event, or is that data just stored in there permanently/until we actually build it?

Major Downtime Action: The R'n'R Option

The company has achieved a major victory and is going to be dealing with a lot of high spirits and excited Mechwarriors. We have a lot of salvage to deal with and some repairs to get done. In that vein I propose the that we give the company a second downtime immediately. Let them celebrate and blow off steam before we load them into the ship for month plus of space travel.

While the mechwarriors are relaxing, let's get our hands on as much active

- Company R&R to take a second downtime immediately.

I am not very smart when it comes to reserves, as I don't know the setting or 'mechs very well. So I am blatantly stealing LegendaryBovine's assignments. I realise this means that these units aren't getting the second RnR, so we need to be mindful that they might be a bit grumpy.

-Wolfhound needs repairs if it is feasible, it is pretty much a death sentence right now.
-I like the suggestion of upgrading the Stormwolf to a D for more of a long range role.

Selling Salvage or ‘Mechs
-I don't think we want to barter for anything right now, except for what we need to swap out the Stormwolf to the D model as above.

(I hope this is a better action plan?)

Doesn't know the impossible.

OK, here's an actual plan to do some mech upgrades:

Major Downtime Action
Purchase Kheper KHP-7R for 12 barter

Repairs, Rebuilds, and Upgrades
- Spend 3 Salvage to build Preta C-PRT-O Invictus
- Spend 2 Salvage to change to Preta-C-PRT-OA Dominus (this is the cost per the op, but a few posts have suggested it's only one salvage to change models? Is there a discount for doing it at point of build instead of as a refit?)
Keep Malice, Jackalope, Prefect, and Cuirass parts (Blade as well if cost above is incorrect)

Units and Warriors reserved for Combat
Lance 1 (Command Lance)
- Unit 1: Black Knight
- Warrior: Ironsides
- Unit 2: Trebuchet
- Warrior: Cherry Bomb
- Unit 3: Vindicator
- Warrior: Weasel
- Unit 4: Firestarter
- Warrior: Shotel

Lance 2 (Pursuit or Light Calvalry Lance)
- Unit 1: Stormwolf Prime
- Warrior: Awoo
- Unit 2: Preta Dominus
- Warrior: Taboo
- Unit 3: Jackalope
- Warrior: Impact
- Unit 4: Jackalope
- Warrior: Fisher

Lance 3 (Recon Lance)
- Unit 1: Kheper
- Warrior: Hardpoint
- Unit 2: Shadow Hawk
- Warrior: Frontline
- Unit 3: Locust
- Warrior: Chilli
- Unit 4: Locust
- Warrior: Sahara

Warriors Training:
- Frost, High Voltage, Funnelweb, Bugbear, Indiana, Flycatcher, Lioness, Afterburner, Rat Party

Unassigned Warriors:
- Drake (injured)

Experience Expenditures:
- None

The Preta and Kheper are solid replacements for the Wolfhound and Valkyrie in the current lineup, adding a good deal of armor and damage while still being fast enough to qualify for the special lance types. Note that with training everyone, we are going to have to do a full rest at some point - we'll end this downtime/contract with 5 warriors at 1 safe action and 12 at their yellow action, meaning we'll either need to take a break next turn or we won't have enough pilots to field the next turn since at least 7 will be on forced rest. Still probably worth it to try and get some XP towards skill upgrades and/or crosstraining the size 1 only pilots to size 2 for versatility sake.

Hey goons, I found some very Spicy upgrades digging through the salvage/buy list to see what even we had.

We gotta get and refit that Excalibur pronto. Its a huge diamond in the rough.

See later post for updated version
Action Plan
Unit Sales: (18 barter to begin)
Sell unit: WLF-2 wolfhound

Major Downtime Action
Purchase EXC-B2 Excalibur for 19 barter

Repair
Refit EXC-B2 Excalibur to EXC-D1 Excalibur for 3 salvage
Repair C-PRT-O Preta for 3 salvage.
Repair JLP-bd Jackalope for 2 salvage.
Refit Shadow Hawk to SHD-7CS for 2 salvage
Cost: 6 salvage.
Note: The preta caelestis is amazing but extra c3i mechs is more important now. Its a shame we didn't get one more salvage last time! A ridiculous refit was possible.

Reasoning: The prefect is okay as a heavy, but the excalibur is so much better. We are trading this(wlf-2) for this, a second black knight and this. Note the c3i. :ssh:
The jackalope repair is a no-brainer

Combat Roster.
Lance 1: Command Lance
BL-18-KNT - Frost
Stormwolf - Awoo
Vindicator - Frontline
TBT-7m Trebuchet - Cherry Bomb
Note: The black knight command mech ability helps qualifies this lance for command lance!

Lance 2: Command or Medium Battle lances.
EXC-D1 Excalibur - Ironsides
Shadow hawk - Hardpoint
Preta C-PRT-O Invictus - Taboo
RZK-9s Razorback - Weasel
Note: Taboo is tagged as a Lance Commander, and should qualify to lead a second command lance due to company size. The preta and excalibur should be in the same unit for maximum impact and spooky telephone magic as they are both c3i mechs. :ssh:

Lance 3: Light Battle Lance
3x LPB-BD jackalope - Impact, Shotel, Fisher
1x FS9-m2 Firestarter - Chili
Note: The presence of a light scout in the form of the Valkyrie is mandatory for this lance type. This lance type gives them a handfull of rerolls to spread out among the gang

Lance 4: Scout Lance
2x LCT-7v Locust - Funnelweb, Indiana
VLK-QDD - Bugbear
KHP-7R Kheper - High Voltage
If for some reason we can not afford the Kheper, let it drop from lance 4.

Train:
Vehicle Crew: Flycatcher, Lioness, Afterburner, Rat party (Didn't they train last round?)
Mechwarriors: Sahara (freebie, fully rested)

Note to the thread: we have a forced mandatory double downtime soon. This is the reason for alll the cash-grabbing in this action plan, so we have enough to afford upkeep twice!
See here and here for details!
We want breathing room in the form of money or extra personell, So keep an eye on it when training and suchlike!
This will occur after our 3rd mission, of which we have done 1, so the deployment after next is when things get expensive. We should maybe vacate the planet before we get attacked on downtime!

Question for ptn: The hauberk is actually pretty interesting, so I'm glad I looked it up - is Rat Party a unit that can just be deployed in a support lance of 1? It looked like that lance didn't have ANY requirements, including size?!

As far as the Random Event Goes...

I'm sort of torn! The malice has some disgusting variants long term, but it the story/future planning that has me thinking about things:

If we return the mech and go neutral; we're helping the wolves take the planet, and its maybe cool to be in their good graces come a few months later. If we -dont- though, we're definitely baiting an attack and could also help weaken the defenders; but the timing is set to hit at our worst moment when everyone's asleep.(probably).

I think negotiation had merit (but the Excalibur is literally too good to pass up!). Not for the good graces of the Knights, but to weasel another contract out of the wolves for aiding in our -defense- when we're attacked. That, I think, has some incredible chances for doubling down on audacity: we want to not lose everything; they want the planet, and thats a great lead in.

I also think that while the wolves set us up, they didn't have to suggest us to the sea fox people - and that's just a nudge from Wolf to Wolf (Raniya) and a pat on the back for making it easier, and I like the idea of following that plot. Both in terms of Raniya's original story, but also our company needs: Better pilots and great aerospace are what the clans are sorta known for, and I think we should follow the trail. It may be forced, but there's an upside and blessing about it, too.

The last thing we want is being between the wolves(for not leaving) and the local gov(for attacking) and not being able to leave because our ship is on a supply run. we could always get lucky, buut... maybe best not to tempt fate?
