Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Jan. 13

In a vote that ended Jan. 13, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Jan. 8.

Winners will receive certificates by the end of the sports season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Please note that next week's vote will happen on Tuesday, Jan. 17, instead of Monday.

Ohio boys basketball team of the week: Elder – The Panthers won three games, including the conference opener over La Salle, to improve to 10-1 on the season.

Ohio girls basketball team of the week: Mount Notre Dame – The Cougars beat East Central and Winton Woods and have won consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 6 and 8.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball team of the week: Scott – Scott’s 78-36 victory against Pendleton County on Jan. 6 ended its six-game losing streak.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball team of the week: Holy Cross – Holy Cross won the Ninth Region All “A” Classic with victories over Newport Central Catholic, St. Henry and Ludlow.

Boys winter team of the week: East Clinton bowling – In a match on Jan. 4, East Clinton topped Felicity-Franklin to improve to 9-1 on the season.

Girls winter team of the week: Scott swimming – At the Debbie Loy Memorial Swim and Dive Meet, Scott finished fourth combined and fifth among girls teams with 183 points.

Ohio big-school boys basketball player of the week: Cooper Matthews, Hamilton – Matthews averages almost 20 points per game through 10 games, including dropping 39 points against Princeton on Jan. 6.

Ohio small-school boys basketball player of the week: Luke Abbott, New Richmond – After his smallest scoring output of the season, Abbott responded with a season-high 32 points to beat Wilmington on Jan. 6.

Ohio big-school girls basketball player of the week: Anaya Hawkins, Walnut Hills – Hawkins scored 12 points in a win over Little Miami and led the Eagles with eight rebounds and four assists.

Ohio small-school girls basketball player of the week: Ava Dubose, Clark Montessori – She scored 14 points to lead Clark Montessori in the 43-35 win over Miami Valley Christian Academy Jan. 7, adding 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals,

Northern Kentucky boys basketball player of the week: Jaxson Rice, Ludlow – A week full of milestones included two 41-point performances against Villa Madonna and Heritage. He also reached the 1,000th threshold and averaged 37 points for the week.

Northern Kentucky girls basketball player of the week: Jayda Dowell, Bellevue – She scored a game-high 20 points for the Tigers against Ludlow, including making three three-pointers.

Ohio boys bowler of the week: Noah Seng, La Salle – He led the Lancers to a win over Moeller with a 433 series.

Ohio girls bowler to the week: Emily Lipps, Oak Hills – She had her best series of the season when she led the Highlanders against Princeton with a 415 series.

Northern Kentucky boys bowler of the week: Benny Garcia, Beechwood – His single game of 222 was third highest in the NKAC Division II, but he had the week’s highest series with a 414.

Northern Kentucky girls bowler of the week: Abree Young, Dixie Heights – She had the highest series in the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Division I tournament with a 409, and her 208 game was good for second best during the week.

Gymnast of the week: Madelyn Miller, Western Brown – The sophomore earned fifth place all-around at the McGee Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, over the weekend, where she took third in the bars with 8.5, sixth in the value and 10th in the beam and floor.

Ice hockey player of the week: Ryan Gick, St. Xavier – The senior scored the second goal in the 3-2 win over Columbus DeSales Jan. 8.

Boys swimmer/diver of the week: Landon Isler, Ryle – He took first place in the 1-meter diving event at the Debbie Loy Memorial Invitational Jan. 6-7 at Russell County.

Girls swimmer/diver of the week: Petal Sloan, Oak Hills – The senior won the 50 and 100 freestyle events at the Princeton High School Swimming Invitational Jan. 7.

Ohio boys wrestler of the week: Austin Holman, Milford – He won the 150-pound weight class at the Ron Masanek Invitational.

Ohio girls wrestler of the week: Lexi Fornshell, Lebanon – She wrestled her way to a second-place medal in the 155-pound weight class at the Pioneer Classic.

NKY/IND wrestler of the week: Rider Trumble, Ryle – All four of his wins at the Ohio Valley View Invitational came via pin, helping the Raiders win the tournament.
