The Position


The City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of LIBRARY TECHNICIAN to fill one (1) vacancy in the Neighborhood Services Division of the Library Department.   The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.

Riverside Public Library (RPL) has a history that reaches back to 1888, growing from just a few rooms in the historic Loring Building to a distinguished Mission-Revival Library building financed by Andrew Carnegie to its current system of a Riverside Main Library and seven branch libraries.

Today, RPL serves a fast growing community of approximately 300,000 covering 85 square miles. With a collection of approximately 425,000 books and other library materials, as well as 400 public access computers (including catalogs) and an annual circulation of 1.23 million, RPL is a major provider of information services and cultural programs in California's Inland Empire.
 

Library Technicians, under general supervision, perform a wide variety of complex, technical, and advanced clerical library support duties relating to circulation, reference, cataloging, and acquisitions.  Incumbents perform a wide variety of duties associated with providing library service to the general public, may be assigned to specialized areas as necessary; and perform other related duties as required.

Work Performed

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Following circulation procedure, participates in typical circulation and reference duties, including assisting customers at a public service desk.
  • Assist with the implementation, maintenance and management of the library's integrated library system and auxiliary technology tools.
  • Work closely with the Business Systems Analyst and branch supervisors to maintain the integrity of the library's computer and cloud-based systems.
  • Problem solves item records and patron accounts, as needed.
  • Assist with service to customers by answering information questions, giving directions and making referrals to professional staff, as needed. Assists patrons in locating materials, reserving materials, securing holds, and basic use of library equipment and computers. Answers telephone inquiries. Issues new and replacement library cards.
  • Explain library policies and regulations and respond to customer infractions according to department policy; collect overdue fines and fees.
  • Pack and unpack book bins for delivery between libraries; locate and process customer requested holds.
  • Assist in cataloging and processing of new materials, as assigned.
  • Perform miscellaneous problem solving, search for missing items, write basic memos, process mail, order supplies, mend books, and shelve materials.
  • Participate in the promotion of the library services through public relations, publicity, endorsement of library events, marketing, community awareness drives, fundraising and other activities.
  • Conduct and assist in a variety of instructional classes in the use of library technology and resources for children, teens and adults.
  • Assist in the preparation of reading lists and bibliographies; prepare bulletin board displays.
  • Complete, or supervise completion of, a variety of complex clerical duties.
  • Maintain various files and records; prepare reports on circulation, registration, book stock, and collection of fines; compile statistics and data; tally daily cash receipts and prepare cash reports.
  • Demonstrate strong customer service skills and the ability to work with diverse groups.
  • Serve as supervisor "in charge" of branch daily operations in the absence of supervision, as assigned; open and close branch libraries as assigned.

Qualifications

Recruitment Guidelines:

Education: Equivalent to the completion of an Associate's Degree (60 semester or 90 quarter units) from an accredited college or university with major course work in Library Technology, Computer Science, Social Sciences, Humanities, or Liberal Arts. 

Experience:
One year of increasingly responsible library clerical or technology assistant experience.


Necessary Special Requirements

  • Must be able to work irregular schedules including evenings and weekends.
  • Possession of a valid Class "C" California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

Highly Desirable Requirements

  • Experience implementing or assisting with new technology projects
  • Experience deploying and managing computer systems
  • A+ Certification

The City offers an attractive benefits package, the central provisions of which are as follows:

  • Retirement for Classic Members - For employees hired after 1/1/2013 who are CLASSIC MEMBERS of California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12 and have not been separated from service from such agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2.7 % @ age 55; 3 year final compensation. The required employee contribution is 8%.  The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
  • Retirement for New Members - For employees hired 1/1/2013 or later and who ARE NOT a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12, or those who have been separated from a public agency which contracts with CalPERS or a reciprocal agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2% at age 62; 3 year final compensation. The required employee contribution is 7%.  The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
  • Health Insurance - The City offers five health insurance plans and contributes up to $1,100 per month for employee and dependent coverage.
  • Dental Insurance - The City provides three dental insurance plans and contributes up to $45 per month.
  • Vision Insurance - The City provides vision coverage through Vision Service Plan (VSP) for employees and their dependents that are enrolled in medical coverage.
  • Life Insurance - The City provides and pays for term life insurance equal to $11,000.
  • Deferred Compensation - The City offers optional participation in the deferred compensation plan.
  • Leave Benefits - Includes vacation leave, sick leave, bereavement leave, and holiday benefits.
  • Flexible Spending Account - The City offers a Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Plan for optional participation.
