Summer 2023 (May 2023 - August 2023) full-time work schedule, Monday- Friday, 40 hours per week
 
About the Role
The Highway Division 14- Andrews District Office (covers Cherokee, Clay, Graham, and Macon counties) intern will be working with District Engineer, Resident Engineer, Asst. District Eng., Assist. Resident Eng.; County Maintenance Engineers; Engineering Technicians; Administrative Assistants.  They will interact as much as needed for the intern to gain an understanding of the tasks at hand/concepts so that they can independently apply the concepts. The position is in Andrews, NC.
 
What Will You Do

  • Plan reading, plan review, and plan development.
  • Learn asphalt resurfacing contract development and administration.
  • Learn how to conduct Highway Construction Inspection
  • Learn how to conduct Bridge Construction Inspection 
  • Secondary Road Construction project development
  • Erosion Control and Sedimentation Program 
  • Collaborate with colleagues, which ends with a demonstration of your findings and recommendations back to a leadership panel. 
What Skills You Possess
  • Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering majors
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills. Able to communicate concepts to a variety of audiences.
  • Surveying
  • Curiosity, coachable, willingness to engage, excellent communication skills.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and programs simultaneously and successfully in a dynamic environment, prioritize effectively, and navigate high-pressure situations often with tight deadlines.

 Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a currently enrolled student in a bachelors, masters, or professional level program at an accredited North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI)
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.8 (on 4.0 scale)
  • Must demonstrate GPA by attaching a transcript (official or unofficial)
