Christopher Isherwood ought to be far better known and appreciated; his writing is excellent. I also have a fascination with Germany during the decline and fall of the Weimar Republic – artistically it was one of the most exciting times and places in the 20th century. Isherwood spins a good yarn and pens sharp portraits of interesting people using his engaging authorial voice. I recommend his writing to anyone. The story of Sally Bowles in the second book, Goodbye to Berlin, was the basis for the musical and the film Cabaret. I will also read Isherwood's A Single Man (1964) one of these days.
