Product Description

The Victory V1 Series comprises five compact "amp-in-a-box" drive pedals, with each unit based on one of the British brand's core guitar amp families — from the clean boutique-inspired Duchess, to the monstrous high-gain Kraken!

Designed in collaboration with award-winning pedal maker Adrian Thorpe MBE (of ThorpyFX) and hand-built in the UK, these high-quality effects gloriously capture the essence of Victory's acclaimed amplifiers in incredible detail.

Victory V1 'The Duchess'

This particular model is designed to emulate the V40 Duchess, which is one of Victory's most popular guitar amps. The V1 Duchess can therefore inject your rig with that big, vibrant jangle of a vintage American clean combo — serving as a powerful clean boost, or even adding a surprising amount of US-style gain to your setup!

Key Features

  • 3-Band EQ — Akin to the tone-shaping controls you'd find on guitar amplifiers, these knobs allow you to precisely adjust the lows, mids and highs; offering more sonic flexibility than most drive pedals.
  • Top-Mounted Jacks — The input and output jacks, along with the power input, are ergonomically placed at the top of the enclosure to help save precious real-estate on your pedalboard.
  • Dependable Design — The robust steel chassis is made to survive even the most demanding of tours, with the solid-state circuitry ensuring years of reliable use.

Martin Kidd & Adrian Thorpe on the V1 Series:

"Being able to make use of Adrian Thorpe's experience, and the various subtleties of his design ethic, enabled us to better appeal to the player who likes a clean amp platform; getting their various sounds from pedals." — Martin Kidd, Chief Designer at Victory

"We were keen to make the V1 pedals sound as close to the full-bore valve amps as possible, in solid-state pedal form. It took a long time and many times we had to go back to the drawing board. Despite this, maintaining an uncompromising nature of what the Victory sound is, means that pedal fiends worldwide can enjoy these; no matter what their flavour preferences." — Adrian Thorpe MBE, ThorpyFX

I was undecided about which Duchess product to go for given there is a whole range of items. As I do not gig anymore I did not need loads of power in an amp, but worried the pedal version V1 would not capture the sound of the V4 or V40. I went for the V1 as it is relatively inexpensive and would work in front of a digital modelling amp. The change in tone when the pedal is activated is very good and with some practice I have been able to match the pedal to the best valve emulation on the amp. There is more drive in the pedal than I expected which is good thing as it provides many options. I have also used it in conjunction with theTone City Mandragora pedal and at lower drive levels sounds great. At higher gain levels it can get a bit grungy which may suit some guitarists, but I think it would stack better with tubescreamer or Klon style pedals where the gain is lower. If you want high gain the other V1 pedals would suit better.

I was after a low gain pedal to dirty up a clean channel, but the duchess will allow you to take a distorted amp and reduce the distortion in a much more pleasing way than just rolling off the guitar volume.
