Ex-Liverpool star hints he's open to Anfield return after making contact with club

Dirk Kuyt scored over 70 goals during his six-year stint at Anfield and the Liverpool cult hero could make a comeback to the club to work with compatriot Arne Slot

Dirk Kuyt admits he's been in contact with Liverpool and would be open to a return under new boss Arne Slot.

Kuyt played nearly 200 times and notched over 100 goals for Dutch outfit Feyenoord - the club Slot managed the club for three years and led to the Europa Conference League final.

The ex-Reds forward hinted that he'd be open to working under his fellow countryman, who joined this summer after Jurgen Klopp's departure. Liverpool's new man in charge also has previous with Kuyt, as the forward's son plays in Feyenoord's academy and was coached by him.

Currently in charge of Belgian side Beerschot, Kuyt believes Slot will succeed at Anfield and has admitted he's stayed in contact with the club, hinting he would be open to some form of potential return.

Kuyt exclusively told Ladbrokes 1-2-Free: "Arne Slot is a family man, but he's also a guy who is so into football - he's 24/7 football. If you watch his press conferences, you'll see he speaks very well and clearly expresses himself.

"He can be funny sometimes, but he's also very straightforward. He knows everything about football; not only Dutch football, but you could ask him anything about football and I think he could give you an answer. Premier League fans are going to like him.

"Of course, if I can help Liverpool in any way, then I will. I've always been in contact with people at the club. I did some work for the foundation of the club, and I've done some commercial work for them, too. I've always been close with them. On or off the pitch, I've always tried to help the club because when you sign for Liverpool, you become part of a family."

Kuyt has enjoyed some success during his early managerial days so far. His first job in charge of Eredivisie side ADO Den Haag did admittedly end with a November sacking - one that saw him replaced by legendary Dutch coach Dick Advocaat.

But his current stint in Belgium has been much more promising. In his first season in charge, he led Beerschot to promotion. As a player, the then-Feyenoord captain Kuyt first joined Liverpool in 2006 for an undisclosed fee, after netting an impressive 29 Eredivisie goals.

Scoring the winning penalty in the shootout against Chelsea in the 2006/07 Champions League semi-final and a consolation goal in the final as AC Milan bested Liverpool, Kuyt hit the ground running at Anfield.

In the seasons to come, he'd establish a reputation as someone who relished the big occasion and won a League Cup to show for it in 2012. The forward then left that summer to join Fenerbahce in Turkey, making 130 appearances for the club.

Kuyt chose to return to Feyenoord and retired in spectacular fashion - scoring a hat trick to give the club its first league title since 1999 and hanging up his boots three days later.

The great Dutch forward has shown a knack for coaching and may look to join Slot's staff as the new Liverpool boss gears up for his first Premier League season.
