This is an Advanced Level Engineering Supervisor that will serve as the Division Project Team Lead as part of the Division 6 Project Development Unit. This position will design and review the design and drafting of erosion control, hydraulic, pavement marking, and roadway plans from inception through to final construction plans in accordance with NC DOT policy manuals, standards, and specifications. This position is responsible for coordination, oversight and review of plans prepared by private engineering firms. This position is also responsible for scheduling assigned projects within the unit and coordinating schedules with other units, governmental agencies, private engineering firms, public and private officials to ensure completion of plans according to the STIP or Division Let schedule. Responsible for creating or assisting with agreements with municipalities and/or other agencies as required. Manage supervisory and administrative functions to support the drafting of roadway plans and completion of Environmental documents. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts, practices and theories used in project development and experience planning, developing, designing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects, independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Experience interpreting and communicating verbally and in writing details of plans, project documents, policies and procedures to convey information to consultants, department personnel and others. 
  • Experience making recommendations and decisions for simple or complex project development based on reviewing plans for completeness, compliance with engineering principles, standards, and design needs. 
  • Experience supervising, motivating, counseling, and training other engineers and technicians. 
  • Experience leading and maintaining positive working relationships with environmental agencies, public officials, consultants, contractors, and staff, in order to find acceptable solutions to infrastructure project problems. 
  • Experience supervising at least three permanent employees, contractors and/or consultants

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of six (6) years progressive engineering experience including four (4) years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Necessary Special Qualifications

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
