About this ebook

Bronte’s novel about a shy, quiet governess who becomes a tutor in a great house and falls in love with its lonely and mysterious master is one of the great classics of English literature. Unique in its attention to the thoughts and feelings of a female protagonist, Jane Eyre was ahead of its time as a proto-feminist text. When it was published in 1847, however, Bronte was attacked by critics for what they felt was anti-Christian sentiment in her unflinching critique of the oppressions of Victorian society.

I would honestly have to say that Jane Eyre was the worst book I have ever read. For starters, the beginning of the story is incredibly depressive, and certain words and language used throughout the book don’t suit the new-modern-day language that we are used to today. From a first-person perspective, this is what Jane Eyre was like to me. I open the book and see that the author died over 150 years ago; my expected enjoyment of the story goes from a 6/10 to a 4/10. I turn a few more pages and am on a title page of sorts; I see the way it is formatted, the year it is published, and the words, An Autobiography. New expected rating; 2/10. I ignore the preface and read the first page of Chapter 1 – I am horrified. The way it is written, the way the narrator is speaking…I am on the verge of hating the book after reading only the first page. Expected rating; 1/10. I finished the first chapter, and guess what? I loathed it. Worst thing ever. Rating so far: 0.5/10. I finished the second chapter, hated it even more. I didn’t know how I was going to be able to read around 80 pages of this every fortnight. Somehow I survived the pain of reading the first seven chapters... just a taste...

I recently read this story in my AP English class and i'll be honest, I stopped reading after Chapter 19. This book has a great moral and an everlasting love story but it took way too long to get to those main points. Written during the Victorian Times, it is very descriptive with detail along with its Victorian language but the detail seems to never end. I got bored and uninterested so I just decided to watch the movie which is able to sum it up in two hours rather than 500 pages. All in all it still is a great novel with a tragic twist. I only reccomend this book to people who love passing "a lot" of time and is capable of the patience while reading this book.

Jane Eyre is an all time classic and I have read it a number of times for pure entertainment, without having to be forced by a school. However it does have it's flaws such as the narrative which is quite monotonous and the plot line, though original at the time is now the cliche for all romance books. Despite this I would hearty recommend this book to anyone!

About the author

The eldest of the Bronte sisters, Charlotte worked as a governess and submitted her works under a man’s name in order to be published. She eventually travelled to London and revealed her true identity to her publisher, and thus began friendships with many of the celebrated literary talents of the day. Bronte published three well-received novels before her death in 1855 at the age of 38.
