Abstract

Despite the importance of presidents, boards, and their relationship limited research examines the conditions under which these institutional actors operate. We use novel data and latent profile analysis to evaluate the different patterns of presidential turnover and board characteristics at 231 public Division I universities. Results reveal 6 distinct institutional profiles or groups. Understanding these profiles is critical because of the increased instability of the presidential role, the importance of the president-trustee relationship for university governance, and the implications for institutional success. We then evaluate the internal and external environmental factors associated with these different profiles. This addresses our complete lack of knowledge regarding the internal and environmental factors (e.g., resources, state contexts, etc.) that are associated with different profiles.
