Workshop: Steeking in Knitting

In knitting, steeking is a shortcut used to knit garments such as sweaters in the round without interruption for openings or sleeves until the end. After completing a tube, a straight line is cut along the centre of a column of stitches, in order to make room for an opening or place to attach another piece. Steeks are made either side of where the cut will take place in order to secure the knitted stitches.

This workshop looks at one way of steeking, which uses crochet to secure the stitches. The cut edge will then be worked into by picking up stitches.

What I need to bring: Pre-knitted tube worked in DK on 4 mm needles can be worked as wished e.g. fairisle, plain, striped, etc.  2.5 mm or 3 mm crochet hook, Scissors – small with a sharp point works best – Pair of 3.25 mm knitting needles and DK yarn for the Steeks and the knitted edges
