South Coast Rep Announces 2021 Spring/Summer Season

The season includes a return to live theatre outdoors at the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano.

COSTA MESA, CALIF.: South Coast Repertory (SCR) has announced a 2021 spring/summer season, featuring digital offerings as well as a return to live theatre outdoors at the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano. Dates for the season are subject to change based on the evolving health regulations.

“The past year has been challenging and, at the same time, has presented opportunities for creative growth,” said artistic director David Ivers in a statement. “So we’re excited to announce a season brimming with innovation, built on the cornerstone programs of South Coast Repertory—world-class productions, Theatre for Young Audiences and their families, new-play development, and community engagement. We’re overjoyed about Outside SCR and our new partnership with Mission San Juan Capistrano, which enables us to expand our reach in Orange County.”

Kicking off later this month as part of SCRemote, the name for the theatre’s digital offerings, will be Red Riding Hood (streaming mid- to late April), by Allison Gregory. This on-demand TYA offering, directed by Shannon Flynn, features two actors taking on all of the roles in an immersive version of a classic story.

Next up with be the Pacific Playwrights Festival, which will also be presented digitally as part of SCRemote. The festival will feature readings of York Walker’s Covenant (April 26-May 2), Charlie Oh’s Coleman ’72 (May 10-16), Shayan Lotfi’s Park-e Laleh (May 24-30), Christine Quintana’s Clean (May 31-June 6), and Harold & Lillian (June 21-27), based on the documentary by Daniel Raim, with book and lyrics by Dan Collins and music by Julianne Wick Davis.

This summer will mark the return to live theatre with OutsideSCR programming, kicking off with American Mariachi (July 15-31) by José Cruz González. Performed at Mission San Juan Capistrano and directed by Christopher Acebo, this comedy with live music follows Lucha, who defies the tradition of women not being mariachis by taking up instruments with her cousin and hunting for bandmates.

Closing out the summer programming will be You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (July 16-Aug. 1), based on the comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles M. Schultz, with book, music, and lyrics by Clark Gesner, additional dialogue by Michael Mayer, and additional music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. Kari Hayter will direct this musical that brings the whole “Peanuts” gang together.

South Coast Repertory, founded in 1964, presents a balance of classic and modern plays and musicals alongside its extensive new-play development program, The Lab@SCR.
