Space-based Dracula

Most fans of the genre are always on the lookout for the next big shock, and sequels to horror films are almost always a success. But what happens when the bad guys from horror films go to space? Here are 5 space-traveling villains from horror films. Some of them had success, while others did not.

The Leprechaun

The Leprechaun horror film series' sleeper is Leprechaun 4: In Space. Yes, it is set in space, but that is precisely what makes it so mind-numbingly fantastic. Leprechaun 4 is an excellent illustration of how to convert a completely ludicrous idea into something really "unique." The film is jam-packed with realistic effects, innovative killings, and hilarious Leprechaun lines that will have you rolling on the floor. Leprechaun 4: In Space is a must-see for fans of the Leprechaun franchise or horror films in general.

Pinhead

Hellraiser: Bloodline is a fascinating continuation of the series that also serves as a prequel. The story spans three different time periods: the 1700s, the 1990s, and the 2200s. My expectations for the fourth installment of the series were not very high, and let's be honest: I'm really only here for Pinhead and the other Cenobites. It is always a pleasure to see Doug Bradley perform because he maintains that icy, sinister, and demonic aura. This makes no sense and is difficult to grasp, but who cares about any of those things? Even if you've seen everything of Hellraiser before, you should see Bloodline simply for Pinhead's sequences since they're so terrifying. If you liked Hellraiser or any of the other works by Clive Barker, you should check out this one for sure. Even if there isn't a whole lot of logic behind it, it's still a really entertaining journey.

Critters

I must confess that I was fascinated when I heard that Critters 4 will be set in outer space! I mean, how could they possible beat the previous Critters movies? But then I saw the cast list and it simply didn't seem promising. Brad Dourif? Is that Angela Bassett, by any chance? Isn't Anders Hove a well-known Danish actor? I couldn't see how this could work in the end.

And my concerns were verified when I eventually watched Critters 4. A rip-off of other franchises placed in a poor locale, the plot was awful, the characters were bad, and the tale was bad as well. What truly hurts from a fan standpoint is that the very features that made the prior entries distinctive and enjoyable are either entirely stripped away or simply not there at all. Critters 4 is a terrible mess (first published) and a major letdown.

Dracula

Dracula 3000 is one of those rare awful horror films that is so horrible it's practically impossible to see. I really dislike Dracula 3000. Even if it's terrible throughout, my primary complaint is that the finale was a horrible cop-out that left me completely disappointed. "Dracula in Space" was supposed to be so awful it's good, but instead it was so bad it was dreadful. The notion is entertaining, but the performance is poor and the conversation is awful. If you want to feel unhappy for the rest of the day, I suggest viewing it.

coolio Coolio appears. That?

Jason Voorhees

The most notorious follow-up in which the antagonist travels to outer space is Jason X. The man, the myth, and the legend that is Jason Voorhees is indisputable. How he got into space, it doesn't matter. No one has any idea why he's up there. Everything else doesn't matter; all that matters is that Jason is out there, ready to cause mayhem.

In my opinion, Jason X is worth watching for easter eggs and callbacks to other Friday the 13th movies, as well as his transition into Uber Jason.

While this film isn't for everyone, it's a must-see for horror lovers who like campy, cheesy slasher flicks.

Conclusion

Horror movie sequels are a VERY mixed bag. Some sequels, like Leprechaun 4: In Space, take an already ridiculous premise and turn it into something special. Others, like Dracula 3000, are so bad they're nearly unwatchable. If you're a horror movie fan, it's definitely worth checking out some of the more infamous horror movie sequels in space. Who knows, you might just find a new favorite horror movie.
