This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor I in the Forsyth County Maintenance Unit.  This position will be a part of a crew that performs various concrete operations on the highways.  This position will need to have a working knowledge of standards in road maintenance and road construction.  This position will direct, assist and train crew members and operators.  This position will calculate quantities by performing basic math skills.  Position will perform work within an established budget.  Position will be exposed to extreme conditions such as snow and ice, dust, extreme temps, high volumes of traffic, and heavy construction equipment.  Must create a positive work environment with a team approach and be able to communicate effectively.  Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes.  This position will respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work.  POS #  60020925

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used
  • Experience in NCDOT snow and ice operations
  • Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices
  • Experience in planning work and supervising a work crew

 

Additional Expectations:

Physical activities include but are not limited to standing, walking, talking and hearing.  Must be able to effectively communicate the English language.   Exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment.  The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement.  Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required.  As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.  This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.  Safety toe shoes required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
