Mister Ron's Basement No. 1985

Sometimes we discover great, almost totally forgotten humorists here in The Basement. We have found some of the funny stories of Prentice Mulford. Mulford is much more well known today as the founder of the Modern Thought Movement, but from the 1860s until 1891, he made his living writing wildly popular humorous stories.

In 1872, Mulford treated his readers with the story of an unwanted nuisance - - ‘The Public Baby.’

Mister Ron’s Basement # 1840

Back at Christmas, 2006, we presented Robert J. Burdette’s famous speech ‘The Rise and Fall of the Mustache’ which had been published in an 1877 book. You can hear that version in Episode Number 586. At the time it was the longest story we had ever presented here in The Basement.

Burdette presented that speech over Five Thousand times to audiences over the course of thirty-five years, and it grew and changed over time. Tonight, in celebration of the New Year, and the return of our Saturday Night Special feature, we are reading the 1912 version of the story. This is indeed, the longest story we have ever presented here, even longer than the last vesion we did.

As we said then, the story is almost totally forgotten today, and while much of it is terribly outdated, most of it is timeless, and well worth hearing. It will make you laugh, and cry. Enjoy.

Mister Ron’s Basement # 1824

Robert J. Burdette managed to find gentle humor without an ounce of meanness in his writing. This week, we have presented some odd pieces from Mr. Burdette.

A bit lengthy, but this one will bring laughs and tears - - perhaps one of the best stories Burdette ever wrote (it does refer a bit to ‘The Rise and Fall of the Mustache,’ which ought to heard as well).

From 1887, we hear Burdette’s autobiographical piece, ‘Confessions of a Reformed Humorist.’

Mister Ron’s Basement # 1813

Happy Thanksgiving!

Back in the 19th and early 20th Centuries, Freak Shows at circuses and dime museums were all the rage, although most of the ‘freaks’ were pretty ordinary folks. In 1896 W. L. Alden published a collection of stories called ‘Among the Freaks.’

Today we present an hilarious tale of revenge between a Nasty Dwarf, a Brittle Giant, and a Female Samson. It’s called ‘Major Microbe,’ and may be one of our funniest stories ever!

Mister Ron's Basement #1532

This week, we are reading from Gelett Burgess's oblique peek at social mores from 1902, 'The Romance of the Commonplace.'

Today's piece is not one of our funniest, but is definitely one of our best, and most thought-provoking! Try to follow Burgess's thoughts as they reach out via an amazing tangent spurred on by 'Black Coffee.'

You'll probably want to listen to this one twice.

We have a special surprise Saturday BONUS episode of the Basement today!

We are adding on an extra special story from Frederic Thomas Somerby's 'Hits and Dashes; or A Medley of Sketches and Scraps, Touching People and Things,' from 1852.

It is called 'Uncle Ephraim's Husking,' and is a delightful description of the events that occurred at a traditional husking bee, where a community would gather to husk a farmer's corn crop and have a party in the process. So settle back, relax, and journey back to a simpler time with us, and join the fun!

Mister Ron's Basement #878

Author William Wright was much better known during his productive career as Dan De Quille. From the 1860s onward, he covered the fascinating stories of miners and prospectors in Virginia City, Nevada during the height of the silver mining boom, for the Territorial Enterprise newspaper. His stories were both factual and humorous.

In 1862, he was joined by another writer for the paper, a young Samuel Clemens, who would not adopt the name of Mark Twain until a year later. The two stayed friends for years, and in 1876, Twain helped De Quille publish (and wrote the introduction to) 'The Big Bonanza,' a book that details the history and exploits of the miners who discovered and ran the famous Comstock Lode, and other mining operations.

This week, we will read some of the humorous stories from this book. Today we learn what happens to a donkey that gets a bit too greedy in 'The Washoe Canary.'

Perhaps a bit out of character for Mr. Spoopendyke, Stanley Huntley has his mean-tempered character 'meet his maker' at the Brooklyn Eagle office in the 1880 story 'Mr. Spoopendyke's Free Seats.'

Frederic Thomas Somerby, writing under the pen name of 'Cymon' ran a column of sketches of the people and doings in the beautiful, quaint town of Newburyport, for the readers of The Boston Post. In 1852, he published a collection of these pieces under the title 'Hits and Dashes, or A Medley of Sketches and Scraps Touching People and Things.'

While many of these 'Cymon' sketches appear to be true stories, this one may be a bit tongue in cheek. Still, the author paints a colorful picture in a tale of two whitewashers and a barrel of spirits in 'Whitewashing Extraordinary.'

Mister Ron's Basement #38

An anonymous tale from around the turn of the last century about a truly persistent salesman, and a bit of a Scott Joplin piano roll rag.

Time: approx five minutes

Mister Ron's Basement is now possessed of a nice new microphone system, and as soon as Mister Ron gets the hang of using the thing, there should be a marked improvement in sound quality. You may even notice it now. Comments are welcome at revry@panix.com.
