Mister Ron's Basement #1554 This week we are cranking out poetic 'Yawps' by William J. Lampton from his 1900 book of the same name. Mister Ron's Basement #1532 This week, we are reading from Gelett Burgess's oblique peek at social mores from 1902, 'The Romance of the Commonplace.' Mister Ron's Basement #878 Author William Wright was much better known during his productive career as Dan De Quille. From the 1860s onward, he covered the fascinating stories of miners and prospectors in Virginia City, Nevada during the height of the silver mining boom, for the Territorial Enterprise newspaper. His stories were both factual and humorous. In 1862, he was joined by another writer for the paper, a young Samuel Clemens, who would not adopt the name of Mark Twain until a year later. The two stayed friends for years, and in 1876, Twain helped De Quille publish (and wrote the introduction to) 'The Big Bonanza,' a book that details the history and exploits of the miners who discovered and ran the famous Comstock Lode, and other mining operations. This week, we will read some of the humorous stories from this book. Today we learn what happens to a donkey that gets a bit too greedy in 'The Washoe Canary.' Mister Ron's Basement #731 Perhaps a bit out of character for Mr. Spoopendyke, Stanley Huntley has his mean-tempered character 'meet his maker' at the Brooklyn Eagle office in the 1880 story 'Mr. Spoopendyke's Free Seats.' This story is chock full of 'inside' jokes about newspapers of the time, other humorists, the Editor and dramatic critic of The Eagle, and Huntley himself. Mister Ron's Basement #556 Frederic Thomas Somerby, writing under the pen name of 'Cymon' ran a column of sketches of the people and doings in the beautiful, quaint town of Newburyport, for the readers of The Boston Post. In 1852, he published a collection of these pieces under the title 'Hits and Dashes, or A Medley of Sketches and Scraps Touching People and Things.' While many of these 'Cymon' sketches appear to be true stories, this one may be a bit tongue in cheek. Mister Ron's Basement #218 Mister Ron goes nuts today reading an incredibly long, but unbelievably wonderful story by Frank R. Stockton -- from 1892, 'My Terminal Moraine,' an elaborately constructed tall tale of a science fictional romance, with geological oddities that defy reason, and hair raising suspense, coupled with some good old fashioned screwball comedy. What more could you ask for? Time: approx One Hour and Eleven minutes The Mister Ron's Basement Full Catalog can be found at: http://ronevry.com/Mister_Rons_Full_Catalog.html |

Mister Ron's Basement #38 An anonymous tale from around the turn of the last century about a truly persistent salesman, and a bit of a Scott Joplin piano roll rag. Time: approx five minutes Mister Ron's Basement is now possessed of a nice new microphone system, and as soon as Mister Ron gets the hang of using the thing, there should be a marked improvement in sound quality. You may even notice it now. Comments are welcome at revry@panix.com. The Mister Ron's Basement Full Catalog can be found at: http://ronevry.com/Mister_Rons_Full_Catalog.html |
